@SuperDicq @Relected Nah, the bottom would be spending 8,000 bucks in a POWER9 motherboard with fully free and auditable firmware, and daily driving on a VM emulating a free implementation of amd64.https://www.raptorcs.com/content/TL2B02/intro.html

@m0xee@social.librem.one @Relected@shitposter.club I mean to me ME or not doesn't matter. The ability to run blobless libreboot is what counts to me, the only free software mobo firmware.

@SuperDicq @Relected Sure, I was just kidding anyway, I'm not THAT paranoid. It's still a matter of trust though, or did you check that libreboot indeed makes ME in your computer dormant yourself? šŸ˜„

@sallyNULL @Relected Ew, why would you do all that only to virtualize a mess of an ISA?@SuperDicq The single socket boards are cheaper and even though they aren’t ā€œcertifiedā€ yet by RYF, they are fully free (in fact, more so than the dual socket boards factoring for the SATA controller IIRC).

@wrongthink@cdrom.tokyo @sallyNULL@gleasonator.com @Relected@shitposter.club I mean yeah the single socket boards are cheaper but still outside of what I am able to afford currently, I still have to make do with my trusty Asus KCMA D8.I have no idea why you want to emulate amd64 on those boards. Why not just run stuff on ppc64el?

@SuperDicq @Relected @sallyNULL Not sure if that question was directed at me, in confusion.I think, and I’m basing this off of the way I used to be years ago, it is rooted in people’s FOMO of gaming. It comes down to ā€œBut how am I going to run my games?!ā€ But when you begin to go inward and examine that mentality it becomes hard to ignore that making such decisions based off of game availability ultimately puts one under the thumb of those who decide what to compile their games for and where to release them through.Anyway, running a ppc system forces one to be very disciplined about what you decide to install and run. When the possibility of simply downloading a pre-compiled binary from somewhere on the web is no option, you find the answer is often to compile yourself (e.g. enforced open source šŸ˜Ž ).

@wrongthink@cdrom.tokyo @Relected@shitposter.club I asked the question because that's what @sallyNULL@gleasonator.com suggested.Indeed you're right, there's no reason to have amd64 emulation unless your running proprietary software that is only available for amd64, such as games. But anyone who does not intend to run free software only is not going to buy a RYF certified Power9 board anyway.

@SuperDicq @wrongthink@SuperDicq @Relected > Ew, why would you do all that only to virtualize a mess of an ISA?Because I'm familiarised with it, and there's still more free software available in amd64 than ppc64, POWER9 is also intended to emulate other ISAs efficiently and these boards are intended to run VMs, and having one VM emulating amd64 doesn't mean you can't have another one running native ISA.

@sallyNULL @SuperDicq @Relected Fair enough. I can only count on one hand the number of programs that weren’t readily available through the ppc64le repos when I first bought.
