       @smitten Your ISP keeps a registry of IP addresses and corresponds it to your physical address. Depending on how well they lock down that registry (usually it’s fairly publicly available) you can get someone’s physical address from their IP. Additionally a phone book and/or property deed listing has your name associated with your address.

       @spinach @smitten Use VPNs if you're not sure. I use https://www.ivpn.net/ mainly for BitTorrent as it's stupidly cheap.

       @spinach @smitten now mind you every VPN keeps logs so don't think using them for crime will protect you but it's protect you from the average joe and stop your ISP from forwarding you spam (DMCA Letters). I automatically drop DMCA letters on my mail server but then my ISP started mailing them to me for some reason.

       @elaine @smitten I would be cautious about DMCA letters. If your ISP is mailing them to you it’s likely only a matter of time before consequences start happening

       @spinach @smitten federal courts have already ruled an IP Address is not proof of copyright infringement so I'm not super worried. That said they were sending so many so I got a VPN.
