Am I the only one thinking it’s kind of a crazy pills approach to try and recreate #Reddit in the Fediverse? The best thing about Reddit is its micro-niche approach and having seen how poorly niche communities translated from Twitter to Mastodon, I’m not holding my breath. I started using Reddit in earnest in 2018 after having an account since 2006. I was able to join a subreddit about Ford C-Maxes, a very niche community. I like engaging in the #lastfm community there.

@jbwharris I think the issue is that Reddit created a million niche communities all under one centralized umbrella. IMO the defederated approach would be myriad communities all under their own umbrella, federating to the global timeline. I could see this working. I don't think Twitville has anything to do with it.

Neither of those communities, and many other micro subs won’t ever materialize in the #Fediverse. There just isn’t a critical mass of users to form those niche communities. #Reddit has 52m daily active users and 430m active monthly. We’re so far off a point where any brand new service would come within a fraction of a userbase like that. I know everyone thinks federated decentralization is the future, but it also took Reddit almost 20 years to build to those numbers.
