Many scooters(49cc) are super very loud.. :blobfoxannoyed: The amount of sound they produce seem extreme for the little mass they have and carry 🤔

@stux lack of thermal mass turns them into speakers from the vibrations Plus cheaper tolerances less concern for damping and overall avoiding vibration

@stux I have heard (but do not know) that the piston heads are very loose in the cylinders in lots of cheap engines (leaf blowers, original volkswagen bugs, apparently gas powered scooters), so they bang around a lot and have out-sized noise.Needs more electric motors.

@stux The 49cc is a regulatory thing (where I live, at least) - 50cc and up requires a license/insurance; but 49cc's isn't very much to work with, so I think they reduce the exhaust backpressure to optimize power output (and increase noise). Some of these things are 2-stroke, as well - oil mixed with the fuel, which makes them really dirty.

@stux this is part of why the streets of Taiwan are so god damn loud. I'll be so happy when they're all electric.

@stux they're a real issue around my townMany kids recklessly zooming aroundIt's in local news a lot and the police struggle with themThe silly loud noise they produce gets the drivers over excited I think

@stux you've never heard a typical Zündapp "KS 50 Sport" or Kreidler "Florett" with a modified exhaust pipe before?

@stux ok so back in the late 70s, all the Big Boys (16+) in town would ride a Zündapp or a Kreidler. The not quite so Big Boys (also 16+ but usually not farm kids) would get a Puch Maxi (didnt look as much as a TT racing bike as a Florett or a KS ... poor buggers). And all of them would invest in tuning (basically a larger carburetor) and in special Japanese made "racing exhaust pipes" ... basically a selective amplifier for the high frequency part of the two stroke noise emission spectrum ...

@stux AND while producing a disproportionate amount of noise for its size, it's other emissions make driving car(s) seem responsible."the operation of a new gasoline-powered lawnmower for an hour releases about the same quantities of VOCs and NOx as 11 new automobiles running for an hour." https://aaqr.org/articles/aaqr-19-12-oa-0650

@stux the same is true of many small dogs. The volume produced seems entirely out of scale to the size of the sound system.
