@gavi @imstilljeremy I have fountain pens ranging in price from about $20 to $450 (an amazing gift from my wife) and while I love my expensive pens, and they're better than the less expensive ones, they're not 100x nicer.I think you can get a very decent pen for $20-40 USD and be perfectly happy.

@serge @gavi This is my wife's experience as well.The really expensive ones really are very nice, but some of the lower budget ones are still very good. I think she said her sweet spot is $50-$70 where you are often getting comparable to $150-$200 pens.

@hauntedhideaway @serge @imstilljeremy I feel like unfortunately it’s a hobby that requires a bit of trial and error and quite an adjustment. It makes sense why other pens took hold once they were invented…

@gavi @serge @imstilljeremy I'm into gel pens for that reason. My fountain pen stopped writing, and according to fountain pen Mastodon, it needs cleaned, but I keep putting it off. But I have something like 30 cartridges of ink, so I'd really better get back to using it to get through the ink before it dries up.

Maybe there is a rollerball pen compatible with those fountain pen cartridges so they don't have to go to waste if you never muster the spoons to take care of the fountain pen. I picked up a used Monteverde Engage One Touch (relatively) cheap off of eBay and it takes Standard International ink cartridges. I haven't had it for very long but it seems okay so far. The ink seems to sort of dry around the ball and seal in the rest of the ink so there are hard starts but it's nice once it gets going.

@hauntedhideaway @gavi @imstilljeremy I can't speak for others,. but there are two reasons I like fountain pens.First and most importantly, as a person with fine motor skill deficit, aside from maybe gel pens, most pens hurt too much to write with for a long time. In college, I'd come out with hands that were solidly red and had to be soaked in ice water. With fountain pens, you don't need to apply any pressure.Secondarily, I love fountain pens the same way that before I grew my beard, I loved safety razors. I loved the ritual of preparing the brush, making the lather, having this beautiful instrument, etc. And fountain pens give me some of that. Their care is part of it, a bit like the razors, or like a cast iron pan.#fountainpens

Herbin Rollerball that takes Standard International Short cartridges. It's a smaller pen but it is also very inexpensive. I've never used one, though. The reviews seem to be mostly positive.
