@abolisyonista FediTips is wrong on that one. They're failing to distinguish between a server - where the admins are in charge of what can be said - and a piece of federated software, where they can't. The political leanings of the Lemmy devs are neither here nor there. Nothing they believe has any bearing on how a Lemmy server can be used, unless it's their own one.@rewarp

@rewarp> kbin's new anime community is already orders of time larger than the Lemmy instanceMy point is that software choice is neither here nor there. When apps that support federated groups/ forums all converge on a standard way of handling them, there won't be any meaningful distinction between "Lemmy groups" and "KBin groups". Lemmy and KBin (and Friendica etc etc) will all be ways of viewing and participating in federated groups.@abolisyonista

@strypeyOh yeah. I do agree with your point. Ultimately, it is still open source tech, and can always be ran separate from the intentions of their creators.@abolisyonista

@rewarpCool. Oh and thanks for the update about the anime folk converging on KBin. I do find it intriguing that the personal politics of software developers are influencing other people's software choices.@abolisyonista

@strypeyThe CoC of Lemmy is a near carbon copy of the Rust CoC so I guess these tankies must have been so shitty to everyone involved early on to warrant such distaste. But still, it is open source tech that can't really enrich them in any way, unlike for instance knowing every purchase of a Microsoft service will go to funding Bill Gates, or Twitter Blue is giving Elon pocket change, so perhaps the switching cost is that low.Personally, I had notes on an anime movie I rewatched and would prefer to just post it here, because forums are too extroverted for me đšI just like to lurk and read.@abolisyonista

@rewarp> these tankies must have been so shitty to everyone involved early on to warrant such distasteMaybe. Or maybe their behaviour is fine (I've seen no disrespectful posts from them aimed at anyone) and people are picking on them for having ill-informed political beliefs đ¤ˇââī¸@abolisyonista

@rewarpIf I boycotted every piece of software developed by people whose political beliefs I disagreed with, that wouldn't leave much software. Any two people can find at least one thing to disagree on about politics. So if I took that boundary to its logical conclusion, I'd probably be in a cabin in the woods making pipe bombs to send to software developers ; )@abolisyonista

I agree with you in this regard, but it goes beyond just software COC, and to the fact that most Lemmy instances are run as authoritarian hellscapes where thou shalt agree totally with the admins or thou shalt be exiled.I was recently having a conversation on exploding-heads about this, because I dont want to be in a right wing echo chamber, but I also don't want to have to walk on eggshells in case my instance gets banned or defederate for the crime of having an opinion they don't like.

@sj_zero I think just as with Mastodon, an influx of a larger, more diverse group will mellow them out if they want to keep their audience. Perhaps it will be a learning process? And folks in these here parts are already spinning up instances without having to bow to their authoritarian tendencies. Proving the point that it's just FOSS.@strypey @abolisyonista

That's true, since exploding-heads (while defederated from 99% of the lemmyverse) proves other people can host their own.I think for now there's a "guilt by association" where since they're all like that everyone just assumes an instance running Lemmy is like that.

@bob> Beliefs and assumptions will always be baked in. Software is just another kind of expressionThis smacks of pseudo-pomo essentialism. I'm not buying it. Also:https://mastodon.nzoss.nz/@strypey/110531605408500071@rewarp @abolisyonista
