If #Reddit winds down, along with the #Scala subreddit, I'll miss it, as it's been a reliable source of news.Reddit's story is yet another example of why FOSS communities need to own their primary communication channels.I can't believe that some software developers still use #Twitter, despite seeing what it has become, despite engagement going down for everyone but the blue-check trolls. It seems the lock-in effect continues even after many of your acquaintances have long moved on.

@zalintyre When I retired my Twitter account, I think I had over 6000 followers; not a high number, but not small either. The issue is that many of those followers were, in fact, inactive and getting more so by the day. Except for some posts that got a lot of traction once in a blue moon, I'm getting more engagement on #Mastodon now than I did on #Twitter. And I feared that traffic to my website would go down, but it didn't. And Twitter is becoming more hostile to external links anyway.

@alexelcu seeing quite the same here - I had a twitter account since 2010 and built up like 150 followers - now i have 110 followers on Mastodon in a little bit more than a year and as you said, way more engagement.

@alexelcu While I agree with your general point on FOSS, the gamified nature of Reddit and Twitter is a combustive mix with the toxicity of the Scala community. Being an asshole for Internet Points extends your reach on those platforms in a way that it doesn't here, and we see vastly different behavior. I wonder how a Kbin or Lemmy -- FOSS, but with Internet Points -- would go.
