hard to believe that there was stuff that predated emacs, but there was - there was (computer online) editors before emacsbut https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeff_Rulifson apparently made the first one, and is still aliveit's one of those things that *someone* was almost certainly going to make, sooner or later, but he's the one who did it, and as such enabled younger upstarts like richard stallman to make the state of the art much further into usable spaceand this is what he uses the internet forhttps://www.instagram.com/p/B1xF1McB_bI/?hl=enhttps://www.instagram.com/p/By1ksK6ho2w/?hl=enhttps://www.instagram.com/p/BreESRilbJi/?hl=enhttps://www.instagram.com/p/BmcKNUmHGw-/?hl=enhttps://www.instagram.com/p/Bj5AnNuBrHM/?hl=enhttps://www.instagram.com/p/Bbi0E38j_wU/?hl=en๐ right on internet grandpa

@jeffcliff Those links donโt work for me. #PrivacyRedirect sent me to a #Bibliogram instance, but Bibliogram has been discontinued. So I had to disable bibliogram. IG just shoots blanks when visited directly, even after going the javascript allowance chase.

ehhhhh it's true Expensive Typewriter came first and was kind of an online editorbut not a modern digital one - ie one that uses your screen and not the printer. it was kinda an analog editor

@jeffcliff well then there was TECO which used the screen, and the package of add-ons for TECO was called the Editor Macros, and someone ported that to Unix and called it EMACS. TECO was at MIT from what I've read. VI on the other hand was the Visual extension for ex, which was the extension of ed.Unix represents about 60 years of lessons learned, which is why it's so hard to replace, even though people keep trying, they keep having to go back and add Unix to Windows or MacOS.

indeed it does seem like TECO (which indeed is the predecessor to emacs and GNU emacs) is a step along with DEL to emacs

@jeffcliff Now IBM was making typewriters with tape and recirculating wire memories in the 1960s, that could replay what you typed. The later of these were really word processors, but the computer division would not let the typewriter division put a screen on them. There was one that could reflow paragraphs, and knew the difference between soft and hard line and page breaks.
