It’s a really bad look when white guys are referring to Meta’s use of ActivityPub as “digital colonization”. You can dislike what Meta is doing all you like. But you cross the line when you compare the worst epoch in human history, something that continues even now, to using a protocol.

When people compare the use of a protocol to European colonization or the Holocaust or genocide, they stop being reasonable people. This is just not a discussion I’m entertaining. It’s not “good conversation” to me.

These people try to get into “purity” tests with me. But I haven’t actively used any Meta account since 2018. And I’ve been reporting on Meta’s many misdeeds for much longer. Almost all my social networking is on the Fediverse. I’ve developed software for it, and I host servers. I don’t just make my dog food. I eat it too. All this time, I’ve been consistent: the Fediverse needs to replace Big Social.

These people talk about blocking Meta’s server. And I honestly hope they do. On my single-user servers, for which I’m only present, I might do the same. But I also contend that people who use Meta-owned social networks should migrate to the Fediverse. And I would like to help make that happen.

@atomicpoet I am not going to block #Instagram/#Meta/#Threads when it enters the #Fediverse. In fact, I am going to encourage my friends to join Threads through, Instagram, so they can follow my accounts on #Mastodon, #Misskey, #Pixelfed, #WriteFreely & #WordPress.It’s the perfect platform to introduce folks to the diversity that the Fediverse has to offer, without going into geeky details about what #ActivityPub is all about.
