@GeePawHill @freemo Apparently he grew up in Pennsylvania, says his bio, which might answer the second amendment bit.But also he's on qoto, which I've heard very mixed things about, and is not-infrequently defederated. So that isn't a great sign.

@codefolio We are actually one of the more federated instances in the fediverse, measured objectively.There is a bit of a misinformation campaign about that, there is a list that uses a very wonky metric, counting number of instances that defederate. It was gamed by a bunch of people starting one-user instances blocking instances and reporting it to the list. so they managed to get really well federated instances showing as highly-defederated... its wild the shit going on.But no, QOTO has a pretty excellent reputation outside of a few things like that.@GeePawHill

@freemo @GeePawHill Perhaps the admin I was quoting -- who did, in fact, defederate qoto -- was thinking of that study, then.That admin had had problems with people there. But the sort of specific "academic freedom for unpopular ideas" summary from the front page of qoto is *not* going to make for popularity with folks like that.

@codefolio If people dont recognize the need for academic freedom on an academic instance, so be it... But if they are going to say our people are problematic, then quote the problematic posts, otherwise no one should be paying it any attention.@GeePawHill

@freemo @GeePawHill Let's be clear - as you tell me "objectively" that there are no problems, I'm not going to point you at an admin who defederated you from her instance to go complain.As for why she didn't report them, I imagine she did. Also she defederated qoto from the instance she administrates.

@freemo @GeePawHill As far as recognising the need for academic freedom -- I do. But I assume it should be obvious to you why problematic people would be attracted to that freedom. While qoto has the "no hate speech" rule, how *exactly* it's enforced is going to be key to not running a Nazi bar, for all the usual reasons you've heard many times.I haven't interacted with many qoto users (though you're kind of painting a picture.) So I don't know the enforcement in practice.

You're the primary moderator of qoto.And you don't defederate for basically any reason (yes, I've read the more involved description at https://qoto.org/about/more.)So hate speech and harassment are locally and individually forbidden, and two instances, ever, have been silenced for the whole "circumventing blocks" thing -- and none, ever, for hate speech.Thus the focus on "bad actors" and individual posts.Huh. That's, uh, something.

@codefolio @GeePawHill Right as stated we do not defederate at the request of our lgbtq community. As has been publicly discussed this decision has saved the lives of members of the community and we have since added several unique features to take that to the next level. Odd you are twisting that around to make it sound like we are ok with hate speech but ok...

@freemo @GeePawHill I mean, that *sounds* potentially good.If I hadn't specifically heard complaints about qoto, it would sound maybe-good, if very different.The combination of that, with the defederation and hate speech policies, with the immediate "tell me who said that" response from you *feel* threatening (no, not to me personally.)It's entirely possible you're fine and I just happened to see several things that look like red flags in succession.
