@vkc dont use it either but heard the story second handed so i guess i am the most qualified to explain:they make their API cost money and many many many mods use the API to moderate the subreddits. also third part apps wont work. so many mods decided to shutdown the subreddits for 2 days or indefinitively.there is lemmy which is a fedi alternative to reddit/HN/etc https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy

@vkc @grillchen Third party apps have a lot better mod tools. Reddit is focused on money because, surprise, it’s owned by conglomerate media (Advance Publications).

@grillchen @vkc The Reddit division operates at a loss, but as a giant company, they can just sell a few extra WIRED subscriptions and funnel some money around on the backend. But that might harm sales of useless stuff like Reddit gold so naturally they won’t tell you that.

@vkc I'm not sure about the first bit, as I'm also not much of a Reddit user, but yes, it looks like there is some kind of Fediverse-based clone out there called "Lemmy". Here's one instance...https://lemmy.sdf.org

@vkc Reddit soon wants a lot of money from others to acces their API, which would kill third party reddit apps and reddit bots. There are two fediverse alternatives: #lemmy and #kbin (afaik Reddit already banned a few people who called for a migration to those services lol)

@vkc @grillchen What is surprising for people unfamiliar with reddit is how much of its value is not provided by reddit. Some mods do great voluntary work and/or have awesome niche communities. Unofficial apps and browser extensions offer better accessibility standards and nicer ad-free UIs.
