I've been at St Pancras waiting to board a #Eurostar to Paris for approaching 2 hours. No trains are leaving, because "the overhead power lines on the UK high speed section are too hot". There's no other information. And the high temperature weather hasn't even really started yet#CrossBorderRail #ClimateChange

@webmink Is the heat causing the power lines to sag too much, or what?

@webmink I had a very long commute home one summer day because the hydraulic lift that connected the train to an overhead line kept dropping in the heat. The driver kept inching forward a few metres then pausing a couple of minutes. If they haven't got new trains by now I doubt there are many trains running.

@webmink I know this is obviously a climate change story, but it also seems to be a poor engineering (or supplying) story, because we should have the technology to build infrastructure that can work in wider temperature ranges. These are unpleasant but not absurdly unearthly. Trains should be able to work in hot climates too...

@webmink In other words, when they designed the Eurostar they either didn’t imagine that it could get as #hot as it is, or they decided that designing to cope with it was too expensive, because the #probability of it happening was too low. It’s probably the latter. Designing to be able to handle what was at the time maybe a 100 year event (or higher) is expensive. And the project was more concerned about the #Channel tunnel construction than if it would get hotter in the future. Now, depending on what the problem is, the #cost of fixing the issue will range from very #expensive to hideously expensive. I hope the temperature goes down enough so you can get on the train soon.

@webmink Thank you for this frightening but informative post! I don’t listen to news or get papers, but I do gather information on-line. It seems the major media functions to tell everyone it’s all perfectly normal, just a little glitch. It isn’t. It’s frightening. Thank you for a report from the front!

@cathygellis @webmink How is this a climate change story, though? We've had temperatures in the 30s with some regularity for more or less ever. Maybe it's become more frequent, but it was common enough when that rail line was built that there's no excuse for not having designed for it.

@webmink It could, of course, be the result of years of neglect towards investing in the railinfrasructure, due to the privatisation of said infrastructure.

@webmink Too hot for what? What is the permitted max? Is there a permitted min? Who specified these limits? Where is this written down?

@slideman I have no idea who runs HS1, so I'd start with Eurostar. Unlikely to matter either way as neither are likely to reply!
