Alright, @Woodbutcher, and others that enjoy their wood, after I'm done sanding off this varnish, what would you recommend as a finish? And are you at all familiar with something called wax oil? An old neighbor was by today, and said she had that done to her floors of the same type and vintage. I've no idea what to finish them with.

@GettingCooked the neighbor may have been referring to Odie's ( https://odiesoil.com/ ) . It is a nice product and smells great. Regardless of what you use you will want to sand the floors well and make sure there is no nails popped or splintering. You can add color to odies as well with pigments. Easiest product to apply would be a water based poly. They are durable however, they off gas for quite a while.

@GettingCooked if you do choose to go water based poly I would go with one from general finishes.

@GettingCooked @Woodbutcher I’m always partial to stain and poly finish. For floors usually do a higher gloss to bounce light and make the room feel bigger. A few years ago I found a high traffic stain/poly all in one usually used on children’s wooden toys. That floor held up like no other.

@Woodbutcher oh, I've got lots of sanding to do. And this old floor has so many spikes put through it, to quell squeaking, I'm going to be a week setting them and filling them. These floors were well and truly butchered. The wood for the subfloor was super green when it was layed down 102 yes ago, and they've separated quite a bit. Add to that floor joists on 2' centers and you've got one noisy floor. But somebody HAD to buy this place. She calls all the crazy flaws 'character'.
