@kaia@brotka.st The main trade between these areas will obviously be potato chips from the North to the South, and Tomato sauce from the South to the North.

@wakame @kaia Germans were, and remained, bread people. The Spanish on the other hand, who imported the potato in the first place and were its early European adopters, had their entire empire undone by making the tubers that came imprecated with the curse of all the genocided natives of South America a staple food of their homeland.

@kaia If you follow that dividing line to the west, you end up in Canada, the home of the ketchup chip/crisp.

@lain @kaia exactly what I thought. Europeans Identify with plants from the Americas and don't even know about that. Think about how many traditional national dishes and spices in Europe are not at all european. xD

@lain @kaia going to other places, extracting what they have, forcing 3rd places to grow them for your benefit as well thanks to the idea of comparative advantage?I do sort of see your point though.I need to find that pro immigration billboard that says "we didn't come to you. You came to us"

@otfrom @lain @kaia I agree with your closing sentiment, but it's worth remembering that many of those countries (especially in the southeast) were colonized and never had colonies. Ottoman rule, for example, was politically and economically similar to English rule in Ireland (without using locals as agents in Africa and the Americas).

@kaia alas, my college choir went on tour in Italy, and they can tell you it’s still very potato country. Everyone but me was sick of having potatoes at every meal by the end of two weeks.
