@Arcana @mia @animeirl @hidden I don't wanna get involved in the argument but just want to express a pet peeve about the study that anemone linked. I can believe it's true that "wider lane" is correlated with "faster driving" and hence "more fatal accidents." I can even believe it's true that the relationship is causal: building a wider lane causes more fatal accidents. But I don't think this means we should build narrow lanes - it means we should build wide lanes *and* enforce the speed limit. Their own data suggests that would be the safest possible world, and they don't bother thinking about *why* drivers choose to drive faster. Most drivers I've talked to agree that narrow lanes make them feel unsafe, so they slow down - and that feeling (possibly accurate) isn't addressed either. The study is a good example of an unfortunate trend in urban planning where humans are treated as a mere part of the system to be optimized, rather than as participants whose attitudes can be changed through communication and whose agency should be respected. A world built on "nudges" is a safe space of perpetual annoyance.

@animeirl @Arcana @hidden @mia Respectfully disagree. Police enforcement of speed limits is one of the *few* things I actually trust them to do, because they have a financial incentive to do it. Also consider high-traffic vs low-traffic situations. If there's no traffic, narrow roads don't enforce a lower speed limit, but speed limits do (if you have cops on patrol). The times I've felt most personally threatened by cars were walking home in some residential district at night and some car comes blazing through at 80 mph.

@MischievousuTomatosu @Arcana @hidden @mia @animeirl stupid take. I can appreciate anemone's overall point, that drivers impose a negative externality on others (pedestrians, bikers). I just think there's got to be a better way to solve the problem than doing something (narrow lanes) which makes things less safe for everyone if you control for all factors. I appreciate the difficulty of enforcing the speed limit everywhere. Two other options could be increased financial penalties for cars hitting pedestrians / bikers, and more (and better) crosswalks and bike lanes. Maybe some of that extra "width" could be used to make better sidewalks and crossings which don't put pedestrians in the way of cars in the first place. Idk if this was relevant to the upthread argument at all.
