I started playing #diablo4 yesterday and it got me thinking of horror in videogames. There is a scene at the beginning of the game, where your character has a vision. In that vision a village has a religious service. Then Lilith appears and corrupst the townsfolk, telling them to live freely in sin. The priest is upset and so first thing, they bludgeon him to death. The cutscene is well made, as you'd expect from Blizzard, but...1/X

All the actual violence in the scene is off screen. You see hands rushing across the screen and blood flying into faces of crazed townsfolk, but never any actual impact or injury. And also, the other big part of sinning is missing completely. Sex. Of course I didn't expect sex to be depicted in a AAA game, because it has to be mass marketable, which includes the theocracy, otherwise known as USA.2/X

But god dammit, I want a high quality video game that makes me uneasy. Imagine the scene but you see the bludgeoning of the priest in excruciating detail. Bones breaking, blood slpattering... And while they tear him apart, others in the background tear off their clothes and FUCK.I want to see actual disturbing depravity... Video games have so much potential here, as you're not limited by what actors can do.3/X

Instead, horror games rely on jump scares. But jump scares SUCK ASS! When I expect jump scares in a video game, I just stop playing entirely, because I spend all time being afraid of the next corner and I don't actually pay attention to the game...I don't want to be shocked, I want to have to fight averting my eyes from the horrors I see.To be fair, I am 34 and grew up with the early internet. I watched things that I can never unsee and I might be biased.4/4

@Mopsi i also found this scene awkward in the screenplay.Gore out of nowhere. Not funny scene but not scary too due to lack of preparation of the viewer. You can make the viewer feel pain just lettning him imagine he is cutting his finger. Not need for gore scene. But US entertainement producers are so mad that they succeded to make death and violence trivial things (count how many movies where there is no gun or kill in the frst 15min?)
