@C_Chell @sollace @saphkey SVG files precompressed with Brotli and with Content-Encoding set to brotli should be way lower than that. Gzip also works, just precompress with Zopfli.

@C_Chell @sollace I don't have the split SVG files, but here is the demo you requested for the combined file: https://yst.ltgc.cc/api/demo/emotiponies.svgFeel free to check your browser's network tab to see the size decrease. If gzip's chosen (zopfli -i15), it's an 87.73% decrease in size. If brotli's chosen instead (brotli -kq 11), it's a 90.84% size decrease.The emoticon pack contains 69 emoticons, with the original SVG file taking up 2574385 bytes. Even with only gzip compression applied, the individual size of each emoticon would decrease to 5~6 KiB. Small, while keeping all of the emoticon's details. The only downside would be needing the client to support either Brotli or gzip compression.

@C_Chell Once SVG's converted to bitmaps, the advantages are lost.Checked Mastodon's docs on custom emojis, and woah does it feel outdated... There isn't support for either WebP or JPEG, let alone SVG. First the audio codecs, then the image formats. Which era am I in right now?If there isn't a dedicated CDN to deliver those upscaled emojis in PNG format, the emoticon upgrade is definitely a no-go. Mastodon's file format support is for the yesteryear.

@edchdx @C_Chell Mastadon doesn't specifically have to support SVG to use it.I checked the markup and it's just an img tag, so if it can just put a url to an svg file the browser will be able to render that.Maybe it's a super easy fix to whitelist the .svg extension for uploading emojis?

@sollace The main concern is about the other instances, for them to render your messages they need to download the image too, but if they still have the filter, the custom emojis from Equestria.Social will not be shown.@edchdx

@C_Chell @sollace @edchdx I think keeping the filesizes low to save bandwidth is a good outlook.Besides, the emoticons are usually rendered at an absolutely tiny amount of pixels.Many of this instance's emoticons are 200x200 up to 1000x1000 pixels, which are all super overkill.In the weekend I can look at downloading all the emoticons and reducing their resolution+filesize even further, and sending them as a zip.

@saphkey @C_Chell @edchdx Have you tried looking at the zip download of the emoticon pack?I did include all the emotes at 27x27px (same as fimfiction's) and 128x128px resolution in there as the versions I intended people to use.The 256px ones are what I'd recommend for discord, since they're displayed a bit larger than on other sites.
