@ChrisPirillo The problem and underlying thinking makes sense to me. The question in my mind: is this thinking something we should be teaching and testing in a classroom? Probably not.

@Onlineadviser @ChrisPirillo This is a mental math trick. It's one of probably a dozen mental math tricks my kids have learned. What did I learn? One single pencil and paper algorithm, to be used for everything, and practiced with timed drills until we hated it. The new way is better.

@marymessall @ChrisPirillo I know that I was blessed with fantastic private/public school education and we moved to one of the best public school districts in the US when it came time to raise our kids. But when I occasionally encounter the diminished cognitive, logical, and problem-solving skills of young people today, it scares me. I don't know enough about education to say more than that.

@Onlineadviser @ChrisPirillo I think you are encountering the wrong young people. The ones I know are way better at math than my generation was at the same age (flexible and creative in their problem solving approaches) and also kinder. Less rigid dogmatism in all areas of life is a good thing. I'm a physicist and I've done a lot of math in my life... The kind of flexible thinking they teach in math class these days is extremely helpful in the real world.

@marymessall @ChrisPirillo Yes, I would welcome being wrong on this.
