information for anyone who cares for it: 3 chicken legs, deboned, is about 400g, which is the size of a pack of ground beef or pork here in Norway.most packs of taco seasoning are adapted to that amount of meat, so as i was cutting chicken legs, i tried to weigh up about that amount.i know a lot of Americans wills say metric is inconvenient, but that's because your entire market isn't designed around it, so that's why nothing ever fits and all the measurements look like 9.324568 instead of 10.

i'm pretty convinced that European recipes for the same dish taste different than the American ones, even if they use the same ingredients, because if it says 1 cup in the American recipe, nobody's going to write 2.36 dl for the European adaptation, they're gonna round that to 2 or 2.5, and maybe adjust the overall size of the recipe until the overall rounding errors are as small as possible.

in official metric, you're meant to use the biggest scale that has the precision you need. if it's 1/10 metre, you use dm (decimetres). if it's 1/100, you use cm (centimetres), etc.same for weights and volumes.i don't know about, say, France, Germany or Italy, but in Norway, we don't do it quite like that.for example, even though it makes sense to write 250 mL, nobody does that for cooking, baking and soda bottles. it's always 2.5 dL.and nobody writes 3 dm for 3/10 metre. it's always 30 cm.some of the official units just aren't in common everyday use.also, in Sweden and Norway, we repurposed our old mile to mean 10 km. it's used for anything driving related, such as distances to the nearest town, or gas mileage.the official signs use km, possibly because that's how Europe has standardised it, and a foreigner wouldn't know what a "mil" (pronounced "meal") means.

@thor We pretty much never use deci-anything, you occasionally see it on an imported wine bottle but thatโs it.

@Flick @thor we have simul oz/ml on wine, and some beer here.but usually you seem metric in cooking stuff, otherwise, mostly imperial.one area that stands out, measurement of supplements and vitamins, and the drug market. all metric.

@thor cooking is not an exact art. Flour is usually "as much as it needs".

@bufalo1973 i saw a young chemist on YouTube attempt to bake a cookie for the first time. i've never seen anyone so completely clueless about what the right consistency for cookie dough is.

@thor @bufalo1973 if 'as much as it needs' and the absense of the proper ratio of water, a whatever with flour you will not get.too little water, well good luck with that.too much water, well again good luck with that.

@ringo @Flick the usual joke is that Americans measure the most important things in metric: drugs and bullets.

@bufalo1973 @ringo yeah, which requires prior experience. it can be a bit hard to know if it's the first (and possibly only) time you're baking that.

@Flick i suspect this tendency to use non-thousand units is pretty much unique to Scandinavia, or possibly only to Norway and Sweden. i suspect it's because we had older units that were close to them and looked for replacements in the metric system.

@thor @ringo you should see the one that someone did about one of those "Facebook/TikTok recipes" where they deep fry the food 4 or 5 times with lots of cheese.
