       @markarayner I do love a semi-color, but the em-dash just catches the eye. I hate them, but they work.What about ellipsis and weird parentheticals?

       @jrdepriest Ellipsis have their uses, but I try not to use parenthesis in my fiction. (Other writing, yes.)

       @markarayner @jrdepriest Do you not cheat and use em-dashes in pairs for parenthesis? I had an editor draw a ring around that in my work and 'nice' in the margin.She told me much later 'that was before I knew you did it all the time'

       @Hedgewizard @markarayner @jrdepriest Typographically, there's absolutely nothing wrong with that... Em dashes serve a different but similar purpose to parentheses. They both demarcate a secondary expression within a base expression. Parens whisper. Em dashes shout.

       @Hedgewizard @markarayner @jrdepriest My pet peeve is when Em dashes are used typographically incorrectly. There should be no space on either side of the Em dash. The punctuation—like this—should be directly abutting the interrupted words.
