There’s really no excuse for video game companies to not make their games for Mac anymore. #WWDC

@MacChickGenius @smallsco There is. Because Apple likes to only support proprietary APIs like Metal that exist nowhere else, a port is significantly more work, for a market share that is not there. We see the same problem with Linux and porting to Linux is absolutely no work compared to a Mac port, thanks to Vulkan, DXVK and Proton. Apple wanted developer lock in, developers were not having it and Apple got what it deserved for boycotting industry standards.

@MacChickGenius @smallsco Also there is a long history of showing game devs the middle finger. There was only ancient OpenGL support that was completely broken for many years. The worst support in the industry for OpenGL by far. And to top it of, NVIDIA wanted to provide better drivers and Apple blocked them from doing so. Then they dropped 32 bit support while most games were still 32 bit. Now devs need to support a new arch and API when PC and consoles all support x86 + Vulkan.

@MacChickGenius @smallsco Apple for decades tried everything to screw over game devs as much as possible and what we are seeing now are the fruits of it. This is not gonna quickly change because of some WWDC announcement. Apple put decades of work into making sure game devs go away.

@js @MacChickGenius here's one thing I don't understand (I have *not* watched the announcement). Considering https://twitter.com/never_released/status/1666191614253907968 (D3DMetal license explicitly disallowing you to ship it with your games); how's this supposed to help anyone port games onto macOS? From what I can gather people have already gotten many game binaries running on macOS unmodified using this Apple's Wine thing; but that's something users can do, not game devs.

@bugaevc @MacChickGenius They presented it as "Game developers can use it to test if porting their games would make sense". Which was weird. I guess kinda like "Hey, we know our hardware isn't good enough for a lot of games, so maybe test with this first and if you get like 5 fps, don't bother"?

@bugaevc @MacChickGenius But also, maybe their 3 MB patch contains everything you need and that only applies to some binaries they distribute?

@js @MacChickGenius their patch seems to be just a 'git diff' of some quite different version of the Wine codebase against the CodeWeavers' tarball that they have put in as the base URL -- perhaps they're just using a different git commit of the upstream Wine. It doesn't seem to be about adding any specific functionality (not that it's reviewable, and not that I know much about Wine internals).

@js @MacChickGenius "seeing if porting the game would make sense" is obviously complete BS and certainly not something that will attract more game devs to the platform, or a reason for there now being no excuse to not port games onto macOS

@bugaevc @MacChickGenius *shrug* That is what they said in the video. That it's for testing if it makes sense to port a game.

@js @MacChickGenius the old Apple of Steve Jobs would instead release a port of Metal *onto Windows*, claim it's much faster and better in every way than D3D, and invite the developers to target Metal as their primary API

@bugaevc @MacChickGenius Apparently Steve Jobs hates games which is why gaming on Mac is in such a sorry state to begin with.

@js @bugaevc @MacChickGenius I’ve never heard a source for that one. All I've seen documented so far is that Macs were seen as toys back in the late80ies/early 90ies and therefore sort of tried to stay away from games for a while and focused on the “serious business machine” image.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=76wmhCI7huk

@uliwitness @js @MacChickGenius this is funny because of the stark contrast to those 'Get a Mac' ads (remember those?) where they painted "PCs" as being businessy and boring and Macs as creative and artistic and fun
