For *reasons*, I have to probably close down my home-lab during for a few weeks/months this fall.Does anyone have any recommendation to what provide I might move my workloads? They consist of:- One small kuberenetes cluster- Web and database servers- matrix-synapse server- other various serversIs Hetzner still the "go to" provider? The only thing that I need is an european (preferably swedish) provider, and is nice to the wallet.#askfedi #linux #kubernetes #homelab #server #hosting

@selea I would suggest Hetzner. But it's not Swedish.

@selea Having a dedicated root server with multiple VMs running on it and I'm still very happy.

@selea Hetzner is probably hard to beat when it comes to pricing, within EU.

@ruud @selea yeah, running a small EX41S at #hetzner and you can only choose between server in Germany or Finland. But still good enough nowadays, though I wish they would get cheaper 1TByte+ NVMe servers.

@selea I think Hetzner is still "go to" for us FOSS folk. I can't speak for Swedish providers but I use OVH mainly. However, I have recently set up a couple of VPS on AlphaVPS and I'm pretty happy with them so far. There was a problem in setting up one of the VPS and they got in touch with me immediately after placing the order, explained the problem and offered a solution. It took 5 minutes to sort out. very good service. I may move more there in the future.

@selea I've read synapse is quite heavy to run but I haven't given it a try myself yet. have you checked out dendrite by chance? iirc, it's supposed to be a bit nicer on resources. if that's not a concern nvm, I just thought of that bc you mentioned "nice to the wallet" and performance issues was my main reason for shutting down my home server.

@selea if you're looking for the best bang for the buck, you can look at Netcup.

@selea I'm happy with Hetzner (VPS, Storage): reasonable pricing, scalable, professional support. They have server locations close to Sweden (Helsinki and central Germany).

@eroi Na it is not that heavy anymore as it used to be a couple of years back.Ofcourse, dendrite is much more easier on the resources but it is currently lacking the functionality that we need in the family. We are currently 10 active users on mine, and many of us participate in very very large rooms without any hickups or problems

@selea hetzner is definitely the most bang for your buck, but I wouldn’t trust them with critical data. FWIW the instance I’m on is hosted by them

@selea I use Contabo, in German. It is affordable for my brazilian wallet, so it is probably fine there. If I remember correctly, it was "linux" (devRant) that recommended it to me.

@selea I've been with #hetzner for a while, good cheap machines, but as of today, by coincidence, I've decided to close my account and move somewhere else, not for tech reasons, they're just horrible as support.good luck with them

@selea just to make the point, this is what I received out of the blue about the account of one of my clients I manage the servers for. The info they're talking about is my passport, which they already have anyway because I've been a customer of them for a few years. It's unbelievable! and the worst is that they refuse to give any explanation or engage in some conversation about it to solve the problem (which problem though?). How can you do serious business with this bunch of toddlers?

@selea London, but I'm Italian so I'm entitled to anything in the EU as european citizen, and the account is linked to an italian company doing business for 30+ years.I can't believe they are still in business doing these things.I can tell you though this is actually not news for me, B4 moving to them from Contabo a few years ago I read on twitter similar stories but I thought they were just fake news (competitors?). Apparently they are not.

@selea I'm using hetzner for hosting irc client and some other stuff (monitoring etc., light weight workload), I also use hetzner's storage box for backup, it's very cheap.

@selea I use Tilaa(.com),might not be the cheapest these days though, very nice system if the parts needed are there. (GleSYS is in the upper bracket and does not fit the cost requirement, just to mention it =)).

@brother I have given GleSYS a lot of thought, it might be a good fit for colo since I still have a few servers - but it is a long drive to Falkenberg, and they probably dont accept individuals as customers.Tilaa seems pretty cheap actually, I'll give it some thoughts.

@selea I use Vultr for most of my stuff, they seem ok and have data centres around the world but are based in Florida.
