@Mummabear that’s why I recommend scratch, as it’s usually aimed at maki g small kids games where you make things move or act. If you want a physical robot I have fewer ideas.

@Mummabear How old are they? And why programming? Before programming anything, I would have them learn HTML, which should take a while, and then move on to CSS selectors. There's almost no point learning Javascript if you haven't learned HTML/CSS already.

@Jagahati @Mummabear Scratch might be OK, but these childish things are a waste of time if the kid is smart enough to learn something real. Like I taught my brother Pascal when he was about 8 years old. I showed him the basics: variables, conditionals, functions, how to find more functions in the manual and within 3 days he wrote a file management application without any help, I was shocked. Not all kids are that smart, but learning BASIC would have been a waste of time for him.

@Mummabear python turtle:https://realpython.com/beginners-guide-python-turtle/I've taught two kids to code with it, one autistic type who's super smart, and one who's average. Both really enjoyed it and both moved on to bigger things. It's a real language that is used in industry, that also happens to be super easy.

@Mummabear @Jagahati Robots are going to be way more advanced. You could design a virtual robot using CSS, like<div id="head"> <div id="torso"> etc.The main thing is *focusing* on something very simple. Courses that promise "We're going to build a whole game in one week!" It's a big lie, and the students suffer, which is what I saw as a teacher. You can't do anything in 3 hours besides getting the kids to sit still and focus them on one simple concept, like print a string variable.

@Mummabear if you're looking for free, i saw some decent posts here already. for little ones, i believe you need some immediate stimulus response (i.e. flashing colours, pictures, tactile responses).if you're ok with spending a few bucks, maybe something more physical to engage them more would help? saw this before and am thinking bout getting it for my little oneyou don't really teach someone "programming" as much as you teach them "logic". languages come afterhttps://upperstory.com/turingtumble/

@Mummabear Have you considered purchasing an education-focused microcontroller board like the BBC micro:bit? They're cheap (£15) and very simple to program using a graphical "flowchart" tool, and have several I/O options to interface with the real world. Tons of example projects out there for it.It's kind of like an Arduino or Raspberry Pi for kids.https://microbit.org/new-microbit/

@Mummabear The micro:bit is great for kids because they have a lot of functionality built in to get started (LEDs, microphone, Bluetooth, etc), and if the kids really get into it, you can get all sorts of add-ons to do more complex things. The even have robot kits that you plug the micro-bit into as the "brain".

@Mummabear I see a lot of suggestions, but here’s a simple thing to code as a task.Create a program that monitors CPU usage but can be extended for other metrics like RAM utilization. It should send an alert after a customizable interval, default 5 minutes.Let them figure out the rest. Certs? Standard ID/pwd? Custom ID? Whatever. Console where alerts go? Netmsg? Email? Whatever. It gives them the core concepts of everything they need in a real job.
