A world first!Today, France has banned domestic flights for journeys possible in less than two-and-a-half hours by train.France also aims to get 9% of the population on bicycles by 2024, up from 3% (The Netherlands is already at 27%).#ClimateEmergency #ClimateCrisis #ClimateJustice

@Laust @donhawkins @DTJackson Yes, but to people not familiar with Dutch infrastructure: a lot of roads have separate bike paths. A lot of neighbourhoods are designed in such a way that bikes can use direct routes but cars have to make detours. On top of that: almost every driver also rides a bike, so drivers are generally well aware how a cyclist experiences traffic.

@jeroenvanbergen @Laust @DTJackson Curious to know how road maintenance is funded there?

@donhawkins @jeroenvanbergen @DTJackson in Denmark the car owners actually pay enough in taxes and fees that they almost cover infrastructure and negative externalities (so they pay ALOT for their privileges).

@Laust @jeroenvanbergen @DTJackson In the US there is a fuel tax, but then there is push back because 100%-cyclists aren't sharing the expense.

@donhawkins @Laust @jeroenvanbergen @DTJackson Can there really be 100% cyclists in the US? Back in the 90s when I didn’t have a car and had to ride a bike to and from work I still wasn’t 100% “cyclist”. I had to take a bus (diesel, remember this was the 90s) or take a cab sometimes. Both of those paid fuel tax. New York City and maybe D.C. are probably the only two cities that can get by on “100% cycling” and I’m even doubtful of that. 😎

@jeroenvanbergen @gme @DTJackson @Laust No, I don’t think there can be, but every non-cyclist complains about the lack of fair share of tax revenue as if there were millions of them (100% cyclists). 🤣🤣🤣

@donhawkins @jeroenvanbergen @DTJackson @Laust There’s maybe 1-5 cyclists for every 10,000 cars in most places in the US, outside of your major metropolitan areas with dedicated cycling infrastructure. 🤨

@gme @DTJackson @donhawkins @Laust Bikes are great for short distance trips that you can do in say 10 - 30 minutes. If reaching your destination takes more time, other options are probably more time efficient. Urban sprawls with large residential zones without shops are not the best for biking.

@gme @DTJackson @donhawkins @Laust over here a lot of high school students use a bike to go to school. In rural areas cycling 10 kilometers one way is considered normal. Before and after school hours it is not unusual to see packs of 20 or more kids riding together.

@jeroenvanbergen @DTJackson @donhawkins @Laust I think that’s wonderful. I’ve always been envious of the NL’s bike culture. When I was in high school (I graduated in 1990) I rode my bike. And I was regularly driven off the road, had drinks and trash thrown at me, and cars genuinely try to kill me. Just about every day. Fortunately I only lived about 3km from the school so it wasn’t a very long ride!

@gme @DTJackson @donhawkins @Laust That must have been a bad experience. What could be ever a reason for that kind of behaviour?

@jeroenvanbergen @DTJackson @donhawkins @Laust A culture that values the car above everything else and that sees cyclists as 5th class citizens who have no business “sharing the road” with an automobile.
