Can't say I'm in any way excited about Vision Pro. It's tough to bet against Apple in anything -- they'll spend billions trying to create a market -- but I can't imagine any normal people buying it at $3400. As for what it might look like in 5 years I'm thinking landfill.

@leo Player one isn't going to be ready at that price! But it's an interesting looking device. Maybe in another 5/10 years? Improvements in battery tech will definitely help.

@leo If we have this in 5 years, around $1500 (maybe an integrated battery by that time) - it could be a useful product and sell in decent volume. They did a hell of a job technologically one-upping the entire market. I think this is the sink-or-swim moment for AR/VR market as a whole.Give it a year, let everyone else copy from Apple, and see what the "story" is to normal consumers then. I feel like Apple was the first headset maker to even attempt to tell a non-techie person why they need a headset on their face. I thought it was mildly successful, but the price isn't there yet.

@leo If the economy was in a better place and the battery life was far longer, I could definitely see it catching on and being successful.I really liked it and kinda want it, or something like it, to be honest, BUT it more or less seems like a neat device with an unjustifiable price tag.On another note, I think the naming of #VisionPro is intentional, and I wonder how long until there will be a cheaper Vision Air version of this device available to the public

@leo They're selling it as a sort of tablet replacement, but pricing it at the cost of a high end desktop, that's gonna be a hard sell for most people. Frankly I don't get this obsession that Meta and now Apple have with trying to turn VR/AR into a computer replacment. There's little/no benefit to using a headset over a computer and it's a hell of a lot less convenient

@leo It is interesting that they made a self contained fully functional computer and basically produced the definitive AR hardware and software. I think the fact that it is a self contained desktop computer is a bit of game changer for AR tech. …but, yeah, still can’t see myself wearing goggles to work in Excel, use FaceTime, look at panoramic photos, or watch movies.

@leo I can see how this is a massive precursor to what  Glass could become. The price of entry is far to high for the average consumer right now. Apple needs to offer a hardware “subscription” for the headset to make it more affordable to the masses at this stage. In Australia I estimate this thing will cost close to $7,000 to buy (with prescription lenses), that’s an absurd price for something I’d want to upgrade every year to get the new technology advances.

@leo Not sure I agree with your assessment. Typically, new categories tech products start at the high end and work their way to being competitively priced for consumers. There was a time people balked at the idea of paying for home PCs. Adjusted prices had many of those early machines in the $10,000+ range. I’m willing to wait and see where Apple takes this.

@phillycodehound @leo Personal Computers when they first came out cost the equivalent of $3500 in the late 1970s. But there was something quite transformative about them and even then they could only really be afforded by the super rich and businesses. This is probably what Tim Cook is betting on. Remember Google’s Augmented Reality glasses? Those were actually cool and all they did was create a new race of “glassholes”. The Apple product looks like a mask I’d wear to go snorkeling in the Bahamas. Google Glass users were “glassholes” because people thought they were spying on them. How long before Apple users are turned into “maskholes” for looking like douchbag for wearing something like that in public? Bet they’re great for porn though.

@leo This is the best comment I have seen about the Vision Pro: I can't tell if the Apple VisionPro will be like the iPad, where I didn't see the point until I actually got one, or Google Glass, where I didn't see the point once I actually got one.

@leo The rumor was they don’t expect actual consumers to buy it at that point, just devs. Then the Vision will come out at a lower price point later. I’m betting get the AR eyeglass frames soon thereafter, but they want the devs on this first.

@leo We all know that AR is an inevitability.Practically every sci-fi movie ever has smart glasses or contacts in some way. This topic has never really been a question of why, but rather when. It seems Apple is making a play that they think now is the time to put a stake in the ground regarding AR in a space they see as technologically possible at scale within a few years. They are paying now to define the bare minimum standards for the technology that all other competitors will eventually have to minimally meet to simply enter the market. The play they are making is the timing - ultimately the question will be was it too soon or just right?

@leo my take: Vision Pro v1 isn’t intended for‘consumers’, it’s for developers (so they can create the apps) and ‘pro users’ (who will use those apps)The follow up to Vision Pro will be the consumer version, which will then have a bunch of apps that leverage the new platform. Once those numbers start to rise, there will be more apps developed (echoing the iPhone and the App Store)
