I hope white Americans are drawing parallels between the way fascists in the government are treating them now, and the way Black Americans have always been treated.

@StillIRise1963 Esp. given how one arises from the other. Germany had practice overseas before they imported those techniques to the interior. Ultimately the only real way to end it is to end how Black Americans have been treated thus far.

@StillIRise1963 Hitler drew inspiration from the Jim Crow laws. There’s a direct line.

@StillIRise1963 Other people of difference must feel the same discrimination against them, not the white racists, bigots, and misogynists who feel a fetish to be superior. Fascism does discriminate using hate to divide.

@Piousunyn @StillIRise1963 I was raised into that tradition, but left it behind as I grew up. It's possible to be both different and bigoted against those who are different, ironically. Part of the reason I didn't find out I was autistic until my mid 20s was because my head was so full of the bigoted stereotypes about autism I had grown up around, that it never crossed my mind that I could be one of "those" people. Internalized ableism, racism, and other forms of bigotry exist. Otherwise, fascism couldn't take hold, because the number of people who are favored by bigots no matter how we are divided up is exceedingly small.

@hosford42 @StillIRise1963 The possibility you may be correct about the small number of bigots? The media, GOP, and evangelicals seem to promote bigotry constantly , maybe with the German Nazi goal of mind controls.

@Piousunyn @StillIRise1963 I'm not saying the number of bigots is small. I'm saying that nearly everyone can be a target of bigotry in one way or another. If people were rational then bigotry would be rare. But that's not the case.Fascism is a progressive erosion of what is considered an acceptable type of person. It starts with those who are most vulnerable to bigotry, excluding them from public discourse and removing their human rights. Once their removal/extermination is well under way, the line separating human from subhuman is moved to exclude more people. And so it proceeds until most of society has been destroyed. Many of the people who helped get the ball rolling are later crushed by it.

@hosford42 @Piousunyn @StillIRise1963 People could get a lot better at recognising fascism if they understood it as the political application of bullying. We get so distracted trying to define it in terms of policies or symbols, when at its core it’s just adults doing the same things that playground bullies do.

@TomMarcinko Yeah, the both-sides fallacy means that even well-intentioned media constantly try to present fascism as a set of political beliefs, like socialism or conservatism or liberalism. That’s a category error. Fascism is a set of tactics for asserting power, not a coherent political position. @hosford42 @Piousunyn @StillIRise1963

@isaacfreeman @TomMarcinko @hosford42 @Piousunyn @StillIRise1963 fascism is a specific manifestation of authoritarian capitalism, just as Marxism-Leninism is a specific manifestation of authoritarian socialism in the tradition of Robespierre. It is simply liberalism stripped of its flowery language of human rights.

@jacobrogers256 This is a reasonable definition (and I think there are others), but framing a definition like this in terms of historical European political traditions doesn’t help the average privileged person recognise a present-day fascist when they see one. It quickly gets bogged down into Mussolini-was-a-socialist and Hitler-allied-with-Stalin. It’s too much to pick apart. 1/n @TomMarcinko @hosford42 @Piousunyn @StillIRise1963

@TomMarcinko In the 1940s, the philosopher Karl Popper set out to write a definitive critique of fascism. But there was nothing philosophically interesting to say about fascism. He ended up with a volume about what Plato and Aristotle got wrong, and another about Hegel and Marx. But fascism… there was nothing there. It’s not a philosophy.@hosford42 @Piousunyn @StillIRise1963

@jacobrogers256 I don’t think there needs to be a single perfect definition for all contexts. I’d be happy to use your definition for political theory. Talking to a historian, I might limit it to Mussolini, Hitler and Franco. But if I’m trying to communicate how to understand the fascism of Modi, Putin, Xi, and Trump, I think bullying is a good visceral guiding framework. 2/2@TomMarcinko @hosford42 @Piousunyn @StillIRise1963

@isaacfreeman @TomMarcinko @hosford42 @Piousunyn @StillIRise1963 fascism is conflated with authoritarianism a lot. It's like confusing a van with a car. They are similar but not the same. Another more broad definition that includes more anti-capitalist variants of fascism I heard is 2 words: palingenetic ultranationalism. It's a good definition and is actually compatible with my earlier explanation of what fascism is.

@jacobrogers256 @isaacfreeman @TomMarcinko @Piousunyn @StillIRise1963 This fits remarkably well with what I've witnessed personally here in Texas over the last few years. It also fits with what I've been saying, that the current tide of fascism started with people feeling helpless because of money in politics, which led to Trump, who was voted in to "tear it all down", which then became significantly more rabid as the focus shifted from corrupt politicians (the "swamp") to more accessible outsiders (minorities).

@StillIRise1963 They will... when it's too late. The targeting is like that of a dinner party... by the time you realize everyone has left (for whatever reason) and it's just you... you are the one stuck with the check. But what you don't know is how you pay. Everyone pays and at different times but like Roulette, it can turn and then its you. No one is exempt... it is just about when.

@StillIRise1963 As a trans woman I see these spaces aren't allowed for me (including bathrooms), that my history is deemed inappropriate, and I can be arrested for being out at night for (checks list) prostitution. Honestly, they don't even have the creativity to target different people than they did at the end of the Weimar Republic. And we should never forget that those laws were inspired by the Jim Crow laws of America. Is it really a parallel or just a repeat.
