@nekothegamer @techlore @Vivaldi @hen @jon even though it's not open source doesn't mean it's bad

@redux it is bad because it's proprietary, there is a reason we have the free software movement and entire organizations behind it. You're rationalizing because you like Vivaldi and this is harmful, people who are into free software should not promote this crap.

@redux @techlore @Vivaldi @hen @jon yeah but its generally more untrustworthy you still can actually definite what it does, so it still can do anything without you knowingthis is why most if not all privacy tools are open source, its because so that you know that the program is not potentially spying on you by seeing the code, if a software is proprietary you have to trust the developer's words on their privacy, and they could still spy you without you knowingthis is why proprietary software is bad, especially for privacy

@nekothegamer @techlore @Vivaldi @hen @jon Vivaldi is open source, the UI is what's proprietary

@redux it doesn't matter, it's still a part of the Vivaldi browser, it may as well hide all the nasty stuff.

@gianmarcogg03 @redux Did you even watch the interview? The code can be fully inspected and even tweaked for individual use. That's basically open. You just can't copy or re-use the code. And that only applies to the UI. Watch the interview. Jon has a car better track record with privacy then you do, I guarantee.

@danielfgom I looked into it and I am both right and wrong. Vivaldi is source available (still doesn't qualify as free or open source because you can't fork or re-use it) but it's very hidden on the website, you need to actually look up "vivaldi source code" to get to https://vivaldi.com/source since it's not linked anywhere on the site as far as I can tell. I've also read the "Why isn't Vivaldi browser open-source?" article and I have to say that the reasoning is utterly idiotic (1/2)

@danielfgom because they say they want to protect the unique features of Vivaldi even though they make money from referral links and not the browser itself so I don't see the point in gatekeeping the code with a source available license. On a second note when I told @redux that they were rationalizing Vivaldi despite it being proprietary, I'm still right on that because they believed it was proprietary too, so if it actually was it would have been just as harmful (no hate @redux btw ❤️). (2/2)

@gianmarcogg03 @danielfgom yeah i read that article too once, the reason is because apparently they're worried about people potentially forking the software and they'd have to deal with legal issues or some stuff idr the reasoning is shit that's true though

@nekothegamer legal issues about the name? Then just name your fork with a different name like everyone does (unlike Braver the Brave fork).
