I've been using Godot from the `godot` package in the #ArchLinus / #Manjaro community repository. So far, that has always been Godot 3.x, which is what we use for our main projects. I've just launched Godot again, and this time it's v4.0.2. How does that make any sense as a regular software update? None of the projects I'm working on are compatible with Godot 4, while Godot 3 is still very much the recommended long-term project foundation. #GodotEngine

Why package `godot` at all, if it's not a package you can recommend anyone actually use?I've been learning a lot about traditional package management on Linux (pacman, apt, dnf, etc.), and one big thing I've learnt is that it's terrible for apps. It's too slow to keep up with software that needs to be updated quickly (like Discord), but also too quick to switch major versions where it shouldn't (like Godot).

@outfrost Just use the godot3-bin package from the AUR then?I really don't see any issue here: #Godot4 is officially considered stable and #ArchLinux is a rolling release distro, so providing 4 over 3 by now makes total sense!

Very mature of an #ArchLinux developer to get mad that I dare to point out a problem, shit on me for not doing a peer-reviewed study on the distro before using it, then block me so that no more arguments can reach him 🙂 I love this diverse and welcoming community 🙃

@njamster You're looking at this from the maintainer's perspective, not the user's. Why are you asking the user to make changes to their setup, and transition from a supported installation to an unsupported one, in order to *keep things the way they were*? This is like Windows forcing people to do dirty registry hacks in order to *not* get Windows 11 or a system update that causes bluescreens.

@njamster If Arch is so committed to the rolling release thing, then why does it ship 2 different major versions of gcc, 3 major versions of openjdk, and 6 major versions of electron?

what ifarch supersedes `godot` with `godot3`, and provides a separate `godot4`, since both are technically "latest" versionsno, that would be too simple and sensiblelet's do more work instead

@outfrost That's... just how updates work? They are not forcing anything onto you. It's YOU who ran the update! If you want to keep things as they were, you know, don't update? Also, I don't see why you consider #Godot4 "unsupported"? It's not like it's unusable or anything...To be clear: I'm in no way against a separate package for Godot 3 in extra. However, there already is an AUR package for it and if enough people install that, it would likely be moved to extra eventually.

@njamster Sure, cause managing individual software updates is now part of my self-imposed 2nd job description 🙄 Yeah, I saw that there were updates, I found a convenient moment, and I hit 'install'. What the fuck else was I gonna do? And what happened to semver?Godot 4 is perfectly fine. What's unsupported is using an AUR package, when just earlier we were using an official Arch package, to which we had moved *from* another AUR package.

@outfrost @njamsterYou are free to create your own package for godot3 if you need it. An official package only means that *someone* involved with the distribution will update it for you.Building packages has become increasingly easy (see pkgctl as part of devtools).FTR: Blaming a Linux distribution run by volunteers for not providing the tool you work with *professionally* in the version that *you* need is misguided at best.

@dvzrv I know I'm also free to create my own Linux distribution.I never said what you're describing my posts to be. When did it become illegal to voice criticism?

@outfrostI must have been reading someone else's messages then 🙃Maybe your assumption about what Arch is or what it can offer is not aligned with your professional use case.We are shipping the latest software and if you need other versions the assumption is, that you are able to help yourself (e.g. by building packages).FWIW there are multiple versions of e.g. toolchains in the repos as they are required to build things not ported to newer ones.

@dvzrv You're right that Arch and Manjaro might, in many ways, not be aligned with my use case (professional or not). You don't have to guilt trip me about voicing my opinion on the matter, given I talked about a specific issue I had and did not address or "blame" Arch developers directly.Unless the Arch team's goal is to prove the user wrong, there are better ways to talk about this, as long as you don't get offended that someone out there didn't find your thing quite 100% fantastic.

@outfrost Arch is a community driven effort. If you voice "your opinion" in derogatory terms without even making the effort to understand how the distribution works that you are using (by proxy), your "opinion" will be (and is) perceived as the complaint of an entitled user that is enraged about volunteers with zero obligation not providing exactly what they want to themHardly any guilt tripping pointing that out to you, but I'll leave you to your misunderstood frustrations 👋
