Saw yet another MPV player tweet/meme and, having recently heard a guy at work snicker at my use of VLC, figured there must be something that makes MPV Player the best one around. Does it play 12 different media files at the same time, like a collage of security cameras? Does it have built-in captioning on the fly? As soon as I read “MPV Player operates from the command line….” I lost all interest because I already know why they all like it. They feel really cool and professional doing everything from the command line.

@WashedOutGundamPilot I find it performs better and it's ui for switching subtitle/audio tracks is superior to vlc's. But there's really no functional difference other than that in my experience.

@grey It drives me up a wall that nobody can just admit that working from the command line is cool and makes them feel like a hackerman. Like so many things in linux they try to sell you on the irritating, often needless complexity as if it’s a bonus. I was thinking the constellation thingy would be cool to have. I still need to get that one working w/ pictures so I can just have a wall of pinups

It is cool, but are you unable to admit that typing apt-get install in the terminal is way easier than opening your web browser, finding the software you want to install, downloading the install file, then installing it?

@kuon @grey If I don’t have that committed to memory, then yeah. All these opinions are based on the norm that you’re a computer hobbyist and have the mental ram/time/interest to learn a whole new manual of commands for something that you really don’t give a shit about. I’ve been using this crap for a while and even now I still end up looking up the command map every time I open a terminal. I just have too many other tidbits of data to pump n’ dump on my plate. Linux isn’t for the disinterested, it gets old listening to guys who live on the computer miss the fact that it’s still a hobby. Nothing about mpv strikes me as meriting such adoration, other than the fact that it’s another mark of the knowledgable in-grouper over the inexperienced outsider.

It is actually a very flexible tool, just one most people will ever bother to learn to use (or need to use tbh). In the case of media players if you ever need to do stuff with a lot of files or automate something the command line API is a huge plus.

Honestly if I'm using aptitude to install something I usually look up the name in my web browser and copy paste the command. It's functionally no different from downloading a .exeAnd for preference I like to install from .debs.

@grey @WashedOutGundamPilot It plays videos with sound, unlike the builtin gnome thing.I dont know how to get it to play multiple vids in a tiled collage though.

MPV is popular because it's the fastest loading crossplatformm media player around. It runs everything and doesn't have the splitting issues that VLC has.

@WashedOutGundamPilot I used to keep up to date with playback stuff (literal tears in rain monologue), but now I just use this. Watching anime tiddies ought not require kernel modifications.github.com/clsid2/mpc-hc/releases

@WashedOutGundamPilot It’s not that. I could explain, but you wouldn’t understand – you post ai-generated stuff. 87709922_p1.jpg
