Why are people so shocked and outraged that APIs are being locked behind high price walls? What did they think would happen after OpenAI got a $30b valuation from scraping unrestricted data without permission and refusing to build or use safeguards?Generative AI fundamentally broke the web and we’re all going to be far worse off because of it.

@joshuafoust Only one worth paying for is access to GPT4. This will all be opensource soon anyway.

@SocialistStan @joshuafoust Do you think this will be a repeat of the search engines wars? With one or two big winners and the rest will be the Excite! or Yahoo!s or askJeeves of the AI world?

@redrufus @joshuafoust Not really, I think these companies are record companies before Napster.

@joshuafoust @redrufus @SocialistStan As I recall, Napster was the flashpoint while Limewire, Soulseek, and a few other knockoffs got themselves up and the whole thing kept rolling just fine while word got around about bittorrent and we protected usenet's low profile, for a while. It is quite laughable to think they'll keep data of any kind from propogating, if people find it useful. If this works at all, it's with everyone having the same access to it. Anything else will be blood and fire.

@joshuafoust @redrufus @SocialistStan The story of Napster is not so much about The Capital stopping us from taking music recordings without paying, as what they did in reaction: They became equity partners in Spotify, which places them in a conflict of interest position where they have the choice of taking money from Spotify as royalties for streams (which they must share) OR as dividends, which they keep.In other words, they kept all their bottom line intact and took it from the artists.

@joshuafoust @redrufus @SocialistStan Soulseek is still here, by the way, I had no idea but it's true: https://github.com/slskd/slskd/They can pick out any individual Spartacus to make him an example, but they can't stop us all from doing whatever we're gonna do.
