I would say it's more of a subconscious defensive behavior. It's something that socially awkward or conflict-adverse people do in order to avoid being vulnerable. They deprecate themselves so that they can get ahead of critique and make themselves smaller targets, and directed outwardly it's a way to express contention or displeasure indirectly so it becomes more difficult to press them on it.

Irony kind of moves in cycles, probably in part because the brain implicitly accepts everything as truth. Statements might begin as entirely ironic and proceed to become less and less farther from truth, until they become sincere. I don't think that's what a lot of people who talk about pipelines don't seem to understand. Nazis, tankies, incels, and femboys all tend to start out as some kind of ironybro, until it stops being ironic.
