Okay... sooo it turns out that my Tray Icon extension in #gnome is fine.. but for some reason #telegram isn't putting the tray icon there. It works in Plasma, Cinnamon, and even sway, but not gnome.Anyone on gnome #nixos 23.05 having this issue? Icon cache? Ideas?

@codemonkeymike I have about three different pieces of software whose tray icons don't work in GNOME no matter what I've done. You can try experimenting AppIndicator vs. Top Icons Plus or some of the others, but in my experience trying to force GNOME back into working as a conventional desktop OS always has razor cuts like this no matter what you do, and likely it will break the next time the shell and/or extension versions update.

@topher truth.. I know. But I can't stand plasma no matter how hard I try, cinnamon is great, but stuck in X11 land forever.Sway is great but still has some paper cuts of it's own.

@codemonkeymike The recommended workflow in GNOME is to not use tray icons, instead put telegram on another desktop, and switch to it when you need it. IMO tray icons are a very bad UI, they are obsolete on any DE once you have the ability to do virtual desktops properly, or even if you just have a taskbar/dock that can shrink the icons like in Plasma.

@jf The entire point of tray icons is to always have a tiny icon a glance away so you can see what needs your attention.Without tray icons, my software would never be updated and nobody would ever be replied to. Also, my CPU could be overheating or some rogue process kicking up load averages and I'd have no idea because no more temperature sensors or load averages in my barThere is a *large* audience that this recommendation in practicality simply does not at all work for@codemonkeymike

@topher Sorry, this comment makes no sense to me whatsoever. I think you are talking about something else. All those situations are handled by notifications, not tray icons.Even in the screenshot above it just shows a "Z" icon with no additional information about what is actually happening. The actual info of the chat messages (e.g. "Alice says 'hello'" or "6 updates are available") is in notifications. Tray icons are just an icon with no particular meaning.

@topher And for load averages you are better with an extension that shows a real widget or just have something that sends you notifications. Tray icons are too small to convey any useful information there, you can't even mark a graph or show any text. For CPU overheating that is an extremely bad solution. You need to setup sensor watches or fix your PC fans, because if you are away from the computer when that happens or you don't happen to notice the tiny icon, then your CPU will just melt.

@jf Traditional tray icons very clearly offer utility and value to millions of people who go out of their way specifically to add this functionality back into GNOME.There are 1396677 downloads of AppIndicator and KStatusNotifierItem Support on extensions.gnome.org, not including all the installs from distro repositories 812312 downloads of TopIcons Plus, 444049 downloads of TopIcons, 69977 of TopIconsFixThis response honestly just feels like the common GNOME obstinance on this topic.

@topher Like even then, you probably want something like this that will actually show you the exact temperatures or allow you to show more than one thing https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/841/freon/
