I can't believe we've gotten to a world where $1000 is reasonable for a phone. Or I should say, that's a price people somehow think is reasonable.I do not.

It actually is not reasonable. People have just been tricked into thinking it is.

@matthew @thelinuxcast Maybe it could be an effect of inflation, while the technology also gets more advanced at the same time. But then they’re robbing more money from us along the way...

If phones lasted longer, I would agree with that, but few people use a phone more than four years. My tone probably sounds cranky... maybe I am, but not towards any of you. I don't use a smart phone regularly any more, just have it off or in airplane mode as a backup device. I do not have a phone plan, but use a mobile hotspot.

@thelinuxcast Flagship models aren't much bang for buck nowadays, it's mostly about cameras these days — the thing I literally need the least in the phone. On the contrary, I'm shocked that for under €300 you can get a midranger that is more powerful and has more storage and RAM than subnotebooks had a decade ago. My cheapo Chinese phone can build the whole Mesa the 3d graphics library from source in under 2 minutes :marseyshock:

@thelinuxcast It was shocking when I first saw the iPhone X when it cost $1000, and yet people bought it anyway! So much for trying having a screen fill as much of the front as possible and removing the home button, in exchange for a notch and facial recognition. I remember when the iPhone 7 removed the headphone jack and people bought it anyway. I am using my iPhone X to write this post, and I haven’t bothered to upgrade it since iOS 13.4.1.

@james Lumia 950 XL had two SIM-card slots, an independent SD card slot, headphone jack, high density screen, one of the best cameras of the time, an infrared camera for face unlock, wireless charging and gas tube cooling (or whatever this thing is called), could be docked to an external display and peripherals and had plethora of other tech even flagship devices didn't have. And a good looking OS (somewhat worse than WP 8.1, but still better than competition). And yet no one wanted that phone! Because it didn't have TikTok (or Instagram? whatever the thing was at the time). It's still usable nowadays with desktop edition of Windows 11 — a little lacking in the RAM department, but still quite usable :marseylaughwith: And I don't even get recent flagship devices, I look at them and I don't want them — why not have a headphone jack or an SD card slot? Yeah-yeah, who needs those? I guess no one needs a plethora of new devices every year too — but we still get then, why not make the at least a little different from each other? Even the camera thing… Now I can see a fly on the opposite wall of the supermarket, what else is to improve? And they still shoot poor photos in poor lighting conditions. Who needs better cameras in phones? Professional photographers can take really cool photos even with a phone, but they can take them even with a kitchen sink. And those who get into photography by using their phone eventually get a standalone device with at least some optics. How does this market even work? The tech that we've had 8 years ago with optical image stabilization worked well enough for me. Yes, it did get better since then, but it's not night and day type of change :marseyshrug: @thelinuxcast

@matthew With AMOLED screens they have, having them for more than 4 years doesn't make sense :marseylaughwith: Honestly, I don't get this tech. Yeah, the colors are better, but who needs accurate color reproduction on a 5-6 inch screen? They do use less power — I admit, that is quite important. But they do have a horrible burn-in! I have a Windows logo clearly visible on solid color background on my old Lumia 950 XL where the onscreen button was, I didn't use this phone with Windows 10 Mobile that had that button for years and it's still visible — the screen just can't recover from the burn-in. I bet you can observe the same on iPhones where the back button is in most apps or some lockscreen controls — things that get displayed more often than anything else.@thelinuxcast @james

@thelinuxcast I would pay a dollar for a 'top of the line' smart phone. They're not really worth that much realistically unless you count the patented technologies that were oh so impressive 5 years ago.
