@thatonecalculator @jo When I say /ad/, I mean ads somebody pays for. You can't compete with Google in terms of value unless you have a site that caters to a very specific niche. Banners are fine.

@feinzer @jo @thatonecalculator You can't charge for ads without tracking those users leaving your site and going onto another one, and you certainly can't compete for value in 99.999999% of cases with the likes of Google.

This misskey instance has like 100k users and I feel like they might be interested because it's an anime instance.I can do a deal with the instance admin that I give them links and images, they include it in their ads and show them to their users. I can then track how many people click on the link I gave the instance, I can also give different links for different instances.There you go, the instance itself does not track your data. The business does and it only tracks how many clicks it gets from said instance. If you define that as data collection then we can't discuss any further lmao

@feinzer @jo @thatonecalculator Tracking people clicking on links is still tracking, especially on smaller instances where users can't blend in. That kind of negotiation is not practical anyways because it puts way too much work on the advertisers, and the amount they pay would not be worth it for the instance owners. Remember, I said /not practical/.

@w @jo @thatonecalculator and also regarding tracking via clicks, that's useless you can't really track anything unless it's literally a 10 or less user instance which will definitely not get any ad deals lmaoIf you have a big instance and only track how many clicks you've got on one link with an id, you can only calculate stuff like 26.8% of this instance has clicked on furry figurines

@jo This could still be used to promote your own services on your own instance, the instance donation links, etc. It doesn't have to be external companies.This is why I actually like this approach, it is not a faceless algorithm targeting you and giving you ads it is literally your own instance, if the ads on your instance are shitty it is entirely your instance and the admin's fault.(also they are disabled by default per user, so every user has to enable it themselves)

@MischievousuTomatosu Nah, I'm just debating their point. I get why they feel like this since I'm also tired of how awful the situation is right now with ads everywhere and our privacy violated but I don't agree with them with fighting an extreme with the complete opposite, that's just another extreme. We need to strike a balance and so far, this implementation allows just that. You can promote things on your instance (even your own donation links) and the ads will not be intrusive or even enabled by default so this just works for people who already agree to supporting your instance anyway.
