I can't remember if I've asked here already or not, but I don't think I found an answer...Does anyone know of a non-profit / cooperative run domain registrar? In theory the ICANN rules don't seem to forbid it, and I'd much rather give my money to a non-profit or something workers-owned than billionaires.

@eval @delroth This: https://medium.com/@justin.t/when-to-become-an-icann-accredited-registrar-a55e5ed9e7a at the end lists some points. And https://blog.dnsimple.com/2016/11/understanding-icann-accreditation/ ; Do note that ICANN did cut accreditation of various registrars, typically because of some missed payments, or lack of answers to disputes and such.

@pmevzek @eval @delroth It would be interesting to get a consortium of universities together to run something like that. It could provide the students some really valuable experience in some of the black magic that is DNS.

@delroth "Does anyone know of a non-profit / cooperative run domain registrar? " Can't exist, this is against ICANN rules. Otherwise Gandi, in 2000 would have been that (I was there then).

@delroth But there are non profit organizations being resellers of registrars, so it might fit your needs, or not. Of course you are transitively still bound by registrar contract and operations, even if using a reseller.

@delroth For gTLDs of course. For ccTLDs, each registry (country) has its own rules.

@eval @delroth I don't find the exact wording for that on ICANN website but 1) I can assure you that the 4 founders of Gandi wanted to be non-profit but couldn't and 2) ICANN form to accreditation says: "Note: Examples of “legal forms” include corporations, limited liability companies, partnership firms, NGO/NPOs, government bodies/agencies, IGO/INGO, etc. Natural persons and sole proprietary companies do not qualify." so maybe they slightly changed over the years because of NPO there but 1/x

@eval @delroth The whole document is really heavily tilted towards for profit organizations, and if an entity wants to be non-profit + only a registrar (and nothing else), it would have to have end prices very high (compared to other current actors) to cover all expenses, and as such I am not sure how this can be achieved for real. 2/2

@pmevzek @eval also I'd definitely pay extra for a registrar that's run by an entity I can trust to not get greedy and/or sell out :) maybe I'm very special though...
