Library of Babel, if completed, it would contain every possible combination of 1,312,000 characters, including lower case letters, space, comma, and period. Thus, it would contain every book that ever has been written, and every book that ever could be - including every play, every song, every scientific paper, every legal decision, every constitution, every piece of scripture, and so on. At present it contains all possible pages of 3200 characters, about 10*(4677) bookshttps://libraryofbabel.info

@stux, it reminded me of this dialogue from "Factotum:"Pickle Factory Boss: Writer, huh? Are you sure?Chinaski: No, I'm not. I'm halfway through a novel.Pickle Factory Boss: What's it about?Chinaski: Everything.Pickle Factory Boss: It's about... cancer?Chinaski: Yes.Pickle Factory Boss: How about my wife?Chinaski: She's in there too.

@stuxNow someone just has to come up with an indexing system to find only the interesting and true entries! Then it would be a piece of cake to use it to predict the future, retrodict the past, dict the present and generally be in the know.

@stux I don't know if I buy that. Where did they get the 1,312,000 figure.Theoretically with the ability to repeat characters, that upper limit would be infinite, Though I concede at a certain point some repetitions might be pointles, but what have they established as an upper limit? Is the long scream into the void contained therein? "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaugh! <- (Charlie Brown ending)The about page didn't say.

@stux All of that information is already encoded in Chaitin's constant, and very likely in other numbers like π, e, and √2.

@calculsoberic @stux And he didn't even need an infinite number of monkeys. :ablobthinking: 😆 https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Infinite_number_of_monkeys- - - -Accessible description of image:old black and white photo of a chimpanzee sitting at a very old manual typewriter, his hands are up near the keys. the photo is taken from the side and he is looking away from the typewriter off to the left of the camera.
