@stux so it’s going to remove 9.2 million remote objects? This is going to save space, at least that’s the idea, correct?

@stux Since you have more real world experience than almost anyone, do you think the current ActivityPub model can support even a handful of mega-actors with enormous followings? Here’s the bottom of Twitter’s “50 biggest accounts” list.If not (and without judging whether their presence would be a good or bad thing) is there a realistic fix for that volume problem?

@EpicKitty @tomasveneny Yup! The only nasty thing is the min 90 days but for long term it doesn't matter I guess!

@waynedixon Correct! Since Wasabi handles a min 90 days we only remove media from 90 days and older :ablobwink:

@shoq Hmm.. Well, if they where to join with the protocol it doesn't matter that much for remote servers I think!Ofc there will be extra load but if they post lets say from X platfrom. Platform X will have the most load and since they originate there it should be okayThe only thing we worry a but about could be all the extra media for example!

@tomasveneny@mstdn.social @stux@mstdn.social If you want to S3 them, Wasabi is fairly cheap and reliable!

@EpicKitty @stux I will definitely take a look on wasabi. ThxI read some stories about AWS and how DDOS attack made bill in tens of thousand dollars. So I'm a little bit scary of S3 stuff.

@tomasveneny@mstdn.social @stux@mstdn.social That's the part I like about Wasabi, they only charge for storage usage, not egress. If I have 1TB stored and 10TB of transfer, I only have to pay for the 1TB storage

Does that suggest we’re heading for a bifurcated fedi where the mega actors are all concentrated on mega servers? (I don’t really see much wrong with this, especially since I believe the instance community model will eventually give way to a group-centric model (once fully implemented), as the best way to granularly separate topical discussions). Also, can that extra media load be handled with more clever caching tricks, and/or cooperative (and collaborative) CDNs?

@stux @tomasveneny @EpicKitty I'll soon migrate all of my servers to somewhere else. A 2GB RAM/2vCPU Ec2 instance costs around 30-40$ per month depending on Bandwidth usage. But without regular hosting providers like Netcup, Privex I can get a 4GB RAM/ 4vCPU VPS Under 20$ 🙂 ..

@stux Hey, I have an question about wasabi.I noticed that they made bucket & objects private, so no more public access (https://wasabi-support.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/13782964730011-unable-to-make-an-object-public-on-a-paid-account)Only solution for public access is pre-signed url but this url is valid for up to 7 days only. How it works for you / mastodon instance?I mean - you have dead links after 7 days or some script is doing url update?Thx
