@greyknight33 don't get me wrong, if anybody actually enjoys driving these city tanks, they should do it. but my suspicion is that people drive oversized cars today mostly for showing off. I don*t want to take these cars away from people who need or enkoy them.

@condret yeah you are probably right for some of them. nah, i mean more so the "right" to ownership of vehicles will disappear. won't even be a "right" that is "taken away" but willingly given away. just the economics of things. prices skyrocket and companies find efficiencies to make usage more affordable (and turn a profit). consumers will buy a product/service that fits their needs for the right price. just we will see more of this crop up in the near future.

Also you can get the truck without the extended cab and a longer bed if you wanted. The advantage is that you can use that truck as a daily driver/family vehicle and as a truck.

I mean, I can fit a shit ton into my WRX too. I've lived out of it while traveling across America. It can do a decent amount of off roading too. But the truck is just better for some things. I still haven't been able to vacuum all the hay out of the back of the Subaru, that I transported before I got the truck. I also can't transport full sized lumber, furniture, and benches in the WRX ... nor can I take it on some of the more hardcore offroad trails.I guess I could do some of that in the smaller Ute in your photo, but I suspected I'd always have to tie down a lot more stuff, not to mention the width issue which I would have run into the other weekend when I helped a friend move.

I can understand that a little, but it was a really bad comparison. The truck pictured is not equivalent. It's intentionally got a full cab and those are sold as to also be regular family vehicles + some extra.You can look at like a 2010s Frontier and compare it to a modern Frontier or Tacoma and say "yea, the truck is bigger but you got the same bed" and there's a better argument there: comparing apples to apples. And the same time, with materials science and tech, they're not really that different in gas mileage. So what is even being compared then? Just pure size?You can get a modern Dodge with a 2-seater cab and long bed and it will literally hold over 2x of that small Ute. Are you arguing people are buying more than they need? Maybe, but shouldn't people be able to buy what they want if they can afford it?

but are they really? They look bigger. The vehicle is still going to be the same width. There are physical limits to the size of the road, and I bet if you put a Australian Commodore and an American F150 front to back, they’d be closer than you think on both width and length.

You buy a fuckhuge truck to show off that you can afford a fuckhuge truck and take up as much space as possible, because the only thing you care about is being as obnoxious as you possibly can about how insecure you are in your masculinity, no one actually uses their truck for anything. @djsumdog when people rrlocate here, they usually rent a vw transporter for 1 or 2 days for cheap money. you can get them for like 30€ per day. Besides that many people underestimate how much you can transport with a mini if you have roof racks. I've transported big matresses with one of these cars.Sure theyprobably perform poorly offroad. if you need to go offriad, get an offroad car. if you have an offroad car in a big city, you're probably a clown.

I don't think most people I know get them as "status symbols." They get them because they like them. I mean I get it, I use to hate big vehicles and all that too. Most of my cars have been low to the ground, fast, wagons. I use to think the same thing.Why does the "showing off" need to stop? Maybe you can only afford one vehicle and you'd rather get something that has that utility, even if you only if you use it 5~10 times a year? And who is anyone to judge why someone has a large truck?
