@kohelet I wasn't necessarily recommending it; I had read on Retrospring that it's awful! @runarcn

@calculsoberic @kohelet Right now it's definitely not optimal (some packages are suuuuper outdated), but personally I believe it's the most beginner friendly Linux distribution there is out there - and yes, that includes Linux Mint.Would I daily drive it myself? Probably not, I've become quite the fan of Arch and Arch-based systems but no way in hell I'm recommending that to a novice Linux user

@runarcn The reason being that it was easier to start with Ubuntu and after I got the hang of Arch I started using that instead :flan_laugh: @kohelet

@calculsoberic Why not just wipe the Ubuntu-partition and use Arch only?

@calculsoberic @kohelet @runarcn what did you hear about it? That it doesn't update its packages as often as it could or should? Something else?

@the_owner_of_mastodon As I understand it, it's aimed at beginners to Linux, so that might be why people make fun of it, plus it comes with a lot of pre-installed tools, which some may consider "bloat," as opposed to something where you just install everything yourself from scratch. That's the impression I get, anyway @kohelet @runarcn

@calculsoberic@mstdn.social For me it was the lack of customizability, very shitty support on hardware especially on PopOS, if you pick one with a driver, you can not just swap drivers that easy and overall just.. don't pick it hahaZorin's theme is neat, but you can install this on top of Ubuntu yourself if you really want it iirc.Yea, I prefer plain Ubuntu and just customize it myself!

@gaycookie OK, that makes a lot of sense! I like customizability very much (and that makes sense with a lot of the lightweight distros). There are even Mastodon clients along those same lines (like Brutaldon), that are resource-light.

@calculsoberic @the_owner_of_mastodon @kohelet Yeah, that's pretty accurate. Zorin comes with loooot's of stuffed preinstalled which might be irritating for powerusers, but for new users it's probably pretty neat to have Flatpak ootb (and snap although this seems to be more controversial) and Wine to install and run .exe-files.

@gaycookie I'm pretty comfortable with it too, even though my first was KDE Plasma. I wouldn't mind using the latter again though.

@calculsoberic @the_owner_of_mastodon @kohelet Regarding the updates, there aren't any security vulnerabilities (that I know of) due to lack of updates, but like-It's still on Gnome 3.38 guys. That's like super old for Gnome. Big reason for me moving over to EndeavourOS was outdated packages like that. Now I'm on a rolling release and never need to deal with that again😎(RIP the Gnome users with that one guy who spent an eternity packaging latest Gnome to official repos)
