       I agree with those persons who assert that these silly "AI will kill us all!" pronouncements divert attention from the very real issues that we need to be concerned with regarding these systems. But of course the former don't have the same publicity value as science-fiction fantasies.

       @BAPearlmutter I think we're talking past each other. I consider the letter to be unrealistic sci-fi nonsense, that takes attention away from solving the real problems with AI. Are you happier with that wording? In any case, have a nice day.

       @lauren I kind of figure that the "AI is a threat" ooga-booga coming from AI executives is just a sales tactic to build interest and get free advertising in the news. The pitch is "Our tech is so advanced it could literally be SkyNet" humblebrag.

       @lauren Calling something "unrealistic sci-fi nonsense" is not a valid argument. Many true things sound silly. We're made of nothing but atoms and our brains follow the laws of physics. Quantum mechanics. The big bang. Evolution. Continental drift. An asteroid hit killed the dinosaurs. "Sounds goofy" is not a valid argument.A bunch of smart scientists, many of whom would seem economically incentivized not to worry, are worried. Many were dubious, then convinced by technical arguments.

       @BAPearlmutter I've known plenty of technologists over the years with completely unrealistic fears about their technology. Though in this case, most of the calls for regulation can be seen as pushes for commercial advantage over competitors, and worse, are diverting attention from the real and immediate genuine concerns about AI. Gee, what a surprise.
