This happens occasionally: We are currently basically down because someone, in their exuberance to acquire piles of OCR text from the Archive, has opened so many simultaneous connections it's killing the place."The internet archive is an important island on the dark seas of the internet" does not mean "Come in with a massive motorized floating steamshovel and try and hoist away the whole place at once".

We obviously have no idea why Brilliant Genius decided they wanted piles of text at such a massive rate that they are straight up DDOSing the joint with data pulls. You can probably point fingers, especially because it's JUST text files, but let's just focus on the fact you can definitely kill with kindness. We're a non-profit, we don't sell your data to people. So we run at the speed we run.

@textfiles I bet Cloudflare would be willing to give you guys an Enterprise subscription to protect the servers from DoS attacks.

@textfiles and the answer could be "What do i care? don't put it there in the first place"frustrating as in "what do i care whether my 50MB attachment with useless PR image junk sent to you and CC to every account in the organization slows your connection down. Outlook does'nt complain." … "What's a Megabyte, anyway?"

You do editorialize in what (US legal) archives you decide to maintain, so I'm kinda complete drained of concern for your service.

@textfiles Just text? 3 guesses and the first two don't count. They trying to download via AWS or some such? Cause that or another major datacenter connection are the only way I can see them overwhelming the archive's link.

@textfiles I have cautioned grad students and researchers on this exact thing. We have a saying, "the cluster can be a weapon"

@gme @textfiles the question is if one would really want to depend on Cloudflare for such a thing as the internet archive...

@jr @textfiles I've been depending on them for over 10 years. None of the other companies come close.

@nemobis wow that article makes it patently obvious that Brewster Kale at least back in 2016 had absolutely no idea how cloudflare operated.

@gme @textfiles yeah but if they want (or some government agency orders them to) they could shut you down easily

@jr @textfiles Are there any examples of that actually happening in Cloudflare’s 13-year history? You know, where a government has ordered Cloudflare to shutdown a site not engaging in criminal activity?

@textfilesNo matter how long I have to wait (as long as it is faster than me travelling to the States with an USB-Stick in my pocket, getting it from the Archive directly and going back home), I will do. Because the stuff I get from you makes my studying so much easier. Keep up the great work and thank you.

@textfiles Is it possible to just serve them Ambrose Bierce's _The Devils Dictionary_ over and over and over again?
