The most common gender affirming surgery is breast augmentation -- in cis (non-trans) women. The regret rate is around 20%.Gender affirming surgeries in trans people have around a 1% regret rate.Guess which people need approval from a mental health provider...

A total of 27 studies, pooling 7928 transgender patients who underwent any type of GAS, were included. The pooled prevalence of regret after GAS was 1%Based on this review, there is an extremely low prevalence of regret in transgender patients after GAS.:anartrans_symbol: (Regret after Gender-affirmation Surgery: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Prevalence)https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8099405/@doxy_cycling @joelle

@joelle @doxy_cycling Highly interesting. However, I wonder if the two situations are comparable. In this study about breast reconstruction after mastectomy (mean age: 52 years), most of the women apparently regretted because the surgery results were bad (=poor quality of plastic surgery). And the study stresses the importance of therapeutic approaches accompanying the decision making process.Anyway, it's complicated... and society/industry with its demands on women's bodies and binary gender categories definitely sucks.

@doxy_cycling @earthworm @joelle The worst thing is that society thinks that breasts = women. Women feel pressure to get reconstruction surgery, lest they be viewed as “less feminine.” Our “femininity” (don’t like that word, because it has a very narrow definition, and doesn’t allow for all the different ways women should be allowed to live and express themselves!!) is defined by others, and by our physical forms. It’s utter BS.

@joelle the study suggests that the mental approval process is beneficial, because there is a low regret rate. They say:> We believe this study corroborates the improvements made in regard to selection criteria for GAS. So the low regret rate is the effect of the selection criteria. One can discuss about how to determine if the selection filter is too much stringent, but not that it is not useful.

@jr @Hyolobrika @joelle Also non-consensual & non-medically necessary surgeries are constantly performed on minors, like genital mutilations of inter* children. Also male genital mutilation aka. circumcision isn't banned either. And both of these things are neither medically nexessary in almost all cases and they never are based upon any informed consent whatsoever.

@Hyolobrika @jr @joelle That may sound good in theory, but that would basically make it necessary to let people die "due to lack of consent" when they are unconcious and had an accident or sth.OFC if someone had ample of time to explicitly decline consent then that's a different story...But shit ain't that simple and people have a right to get emergency treatment if need be.Most of the world ain't an anarchocapitalist & antisocial shithole like the USA where people face medical debt.

@Hyolobrika @jr @joelle see...That's the point:OFC consent should always be taken into account, but do you expect i.e. a 10yr old with leukemia to comprehend the seriousness of the situation on their own? Most adults don't even do that...And it's not as if medical professionals - at least in most places - get any substantial kickbacks from doing shit...If people wanted to get rich with a diplpma, they'd be lawyers, tax advisors, banksters or CFOs...

@kkarhan>but do you expect i.e. a 10yr old with leukemia to comprehend the seriousness of the situation on their own?Yes. That's why we don't allow children to make every decision on their own. Now what does that imply for the medical interventions that this thread started off being about?@jr @joelle

@Hyolobrika @kkarhan @joelle you're right, minors should be protected from a) transphobia and being forced through bodily changes they expressly don't want b) the sex-conforming surgeries, circumcisions, etc that are performed on infants who do not have the ability to consent and c) constantly having adults tell them what their bodies are supposed to look like. I'm glad we all agree on this.

@otyugh @joelle I saw it was something like, in the majority of regrets, because of a "lack of support from friends and families".=> they shunned her/him, until the loss of the full social circle became a regret against the full procedure.
