Today I learned my daughter's 8th grade social studies class is still using the Daughters of the Confederacy curriculum. Complete with such gems as- Most slaves were actually pretty happy and well treated- Most slaves were so happy in their jobs that after emancipation they went right back- The Civil War was primarily an economic dispute, not about slavery- Plantation owners were excited to tell their property about their new freedomThis is just so fucking enraging.

@scottpack Are you in a former confederate state. I’m scared to hear you say somewhere like Pennsylvania or Ohio.

@pierogipowered Well, to be fair I learned the same curriculum when I was in high school. But that was Kentucky in the 90s.But unfortunately no. This is what's, allegedly, a high ranking school district in Ohio.

@scottpack @pierogipowered Been in Ohio. I can count on most white people in Ohio being open or closet racists.

@aut I've already had other issues with this teacher with shit like "Columbus doesn't get the credit he deserves for being such a fantastic explorer". So I _shouldn't_ be surprised but Jesus fucking Christ.I need to figure out how to write a letter to the principal that doesn't sound like just unhinged rage.

@scottpack Confederate states were allowed far too much allowance in how their curriculum was allowed. The amount of unlearning you have to do in college for some of these people is intense. Several of the examples you mentioned above really plague higher learning.Parents absolutely need to be aggressively aware of what their children are being taught.

@scottpack @aut Perhaps open with felicitations and a quote or two from the Cornerstone Speech and express puzzlement with the apparent contrast of the quotes to the school's inclusivity/diversity/harassment policy? And then ask the Principal to share in writing how they, both personally and as the leader of the school, reconcile such things?

@skua @aut That's good advice. I'm still too mentally angry to write something cogent. But no matter what, step 1 is to figure out what the curriculum actually is. That will change the entire tenor and audience of the letter. The teachers have some wiggle room but to a large extent they're teaching what they're told to teach. And what I _don't_ want is a dismissive "She followed the curriculum committee guidelines and as such did nothing wrong."That being said, we did end up reading a few select passages from the Cornerstone Speech after dinner. Her face was exactly the kind of disgusted surprise that I wanted to see.

@scottpack @skua @aut Whatever you do - be vocal and be persistent. The forces of ignorance and fascism are overwhelming the public sphere (and school board meetings). Be the force for good.
