Mozilla is creating outrage by running full screen VPN ads. The combination of VPN advertising with modal ads is quite the toxic brew. Mozilla is headed down fast.

@lauren at a time when the world really needs a basic ass privacy respecting browser, Firefox once again fights to remain irrelevant

@lauren On top of everything else, it's a usability problem. An elderly relative of mine just about manages to use a computer by following printed instructions to the letter. The *slightest* roadbump makes him decide the computer has "gone haywire", reboot it and try again. I have hard evidence that he once did this more than forty times over the course of a week.Throwing up random adverts in the browser is simply unkind to people with low computer skills.

@lauren The worst part is watching them immolate all over a rapidly downmarket commodity service offering (privacy VPN).

@markusl @lauren Use Brave Browser. It has limits but no ads at all.

@MacropodCareThe reason I don't use Brave is that it's Chromium-based. Google has too much power and too much data already: it must not be allowed to own the browser as well. That's why I stick with Firefox, despite its imperfections.@lauren

@MacropodCare @markusl I don't use any of these niche applications that could vanish at any time. No way.

@markusl @MacropodCare @lauren I'd stay away from core firefox. go with a privacy-respecting fork like arkenfox or librewolf

@locus @markusl @MacropodCare I'm fine with Chrome. I've worked inside Google, and I trust their ops.

@lauren I'm sure Google is very good at what it does. The code I've seen coming out of Google has been excellent. The questions, for me, are whether Google's interests align with users' interests, and, if not, whose interests Chrome works in. For example, would you want a browser in which ad-blockers didn't work properly, or which sent an uncomfortable amount of information to advertisers? That's what led me to Firefox.@MacropodCare
