@moffintosh@berserker.town I remember for the PSP you had the famous "pandora battery" which was a third party battery you could buy that managed to circumvent the DRM of the system and allowed you play downloaded game ISOs.

Kinda, it was a Battery which allowed for booting into a Debug Mode which allowed for downgrading the system which then could be exploited iirc.It was fun, i made one myself back then :blobcatgiggle2:

@mario@hornyjail.pro I still have my pandora'd PSP. I think it still works but the battery is flat.

@mario@hornyjail.pro Like as in I can only play it with the AC adapter connected as it will turn off immediately without power. Should probably buy a new battery for it.

As far as I know it was not possible to actually use the Pandora Battery as a regular battery pack, as it would not allow you to boot into the regular system. But this could very well be wrong, been a looooong time ago :blobcatgiggle2:

The PSP subsystem on the Vita is also really, really, really kewl :3Allows for huuuge microSD cards and can be exploited just like the regular PSP and it's NoPayStation compatible :ablobcatbongo: I can download PSP games onto the subsystem directly through the NoPayStation PS Vita client without any external device whatsoever :blobcathappy:

@mario @SuperDicq you can boot into the XMB. It depends what bootloader is installed on the card. Pandora let's you boot from memory stick. You can boot an entire firmware from card in case your internal memory (flash0) is corrupted.Sorry for invading your thread but I was deep into the PSP scene back then.

@moffintosh You can argue a profit motive, but uncertified batteries can taint your brand when they fail. It’s really not a problem for the actual prosumers who can afford these new. Where it creates problems is in the used market, who are more cost-sensitive and thus likely to buy some sketchy uncertified battery.

@moffintosh@berserker.town Why the hell does a battery need to provide data?! Why would a battery need to provide data?!

@adiz Yea, I hate this kind of DRM... I'm fine with say a "device may not work as expected" message popping up somewhere but making the camera unuseable is just garbage.@moffintosh

@adiz Tbf, so do I.I never saw any benefit of DRM outside "securing initial sales" or being able to push a new product by making the old one a pain to repair (read: Corporate greed)But honestly, if your new product is better in a meaningful way, people will buy it anyways...Then again, actually improving products costs money spent in R&D, which is money not spend paying the shareholders.@moffintosh

@adiz @moffintosh I think you can just dismiss this warning, can't you?My HP laptop kept bugging me about RAM it didn't like but it worked anyway, it just displayed this warning every time I had turned it on. I still didn't like it and eventually replaced it with RAM modules it liked (had better timings anyway), but I didn't think it was evil. Hardware whilelists that prevent startup completely are pure evil though, can't disagree with that.

@vaprakhunter @moffintosh I’m really hesitant to be so sure when we’re talking about lithium ion batteries in a market filled with really bad ones. Remember the inherent implications of storing a lot of energy in a small space (remember reading or hearing lithium metal primary, as in nonchargeable batteries have a power density greater than TNT).So the first question is, does this battery provide data the separate? charger needs like internal temperature? Said charger having a very simple UI without an LCD?OK, maybe I’m just paranoid and use Official batteries, and keep almost all my lithium ion ones inside a metal or ceramic container to hopefully limit damage if one catches on fire.

@adiz @moffintosh My model is too old for whitelists, even MacBooks didn't have them at the time :marseyemojismilemouthcoldsweat: , and they've given up in newer ones too according to what I've read, but there was time HP did that shit too.

@moffintosh >For safety sakeLike the Li-ion batteries that explode or catch fire because manufactures side-step regulations and go cheap at suspect factories in China with piss poor conditions. :noa_disgust:
