When I do “tech support” for friends and family I am feeling increasingly puzzled. Take phones: They have all been using smartphones just as long as I have, but with every problem it is as if they have never ever had a phone in their hands before. Every time. I’m not criticizing it. I’m just puzzled. Are they blocking it out? Is it a deep belief that “this is witchcraft that I will never understand”? Or something else?

@khoji There's just so much we take for granted. I discovered last week that my neighbour thought the TLS padlock meant the site was legit on his phone, for example.

@khoji Part of the problem is that the UI on devices seems to change every few years.Users learn where something on their phone is, and then the vendor arbitrary changes icons and reorganises menus. It's like the Wizard (from The Wiz) deciding everyone should wear a new colour every few minutes. There's a reason people hate upgrading devices.

@rrwo Yes. Similar to supermarkets thinking it’s a good idea to completely rearrange their shelves every few weeks.

@rrwo I also never recommend switching from Windows to Mac any more. For most regular people, switching to the new system is massively more stressful and disruptive than any problems they were trying to solve.
