Everything in this long text by @Mer__edith is just on point. It is a testament to the fact that sound historical and economic understanding is key to realizing the threats that wait in current technologies and is crucial to identifying todays areas of resistance. It gives me hope that @signalapp has such leadership.https://logicmag.io/supa-dupa-skies/origin-stories-plantations-computers-and-industrial-control/

She describes the liberal narratives of contractual freedom, the way slavery inspired the mechanisms for control of workers in early industrialization and todays gig economy. At the core she shows how capitalism always strives towards representing people and their activities as quantifiable commodities. This goal has been imprinted in many forms of modern tech.My 2 cents: We can see it today in #Web3 which aims at subjugating the digital reality under the same exploitative logics.

@malteengeler @Mer__edith @signalapp Cory @pluralistic Doctorow writes a lot about the fact that surveillance is 'tested' on the weakest persons first until it is normalized enough to apply to everybody. The article shows this cycle started even earlier than I had thought.

@malteengeler Post-Marxist André Gorz in 1988 was thinking about this. He predicted a reestablishment of a servant class coordinated by computers to do the labor, delivering food by bicycle, for instance.Gorz, Critique of Economic Reason, 1988 Verso
