The HBO Max to Max transition was a quintessential example of how NOT to handle a service/app upgrade. First, the HBO Max app stops working, telling you to install the new Max app. This means of course you will have to uninstall the old app manually from your TV to regain the space. Then you have to install the new app and get it into a visible position, and discover -- wheee! -- that you have to login all credentials again from scratch on all devices and reassociate all devices/TVs. And when you're done with all this what do you have? An app that looks essentially identical to the old one, except it says "Max" instead of "HBO Max" and is blue instead of purple. Talk about amateurs.

@lauren It is a headscratcher. I was somewhat surprised that it remembered my credentials in the new app- I didn't need to log into Max on either phone or Apple TV.

@escarpment On Chromecast with Google TV, Android TV, Android devices, and Linux, it all had to be redone from scratch. Ask me how I know.

@lauren That was not my experience. They gave me a button to install it after I opened the old app. I was even logged into the profile I was using.

@lauren ...but it wasn't even an upgrade, it was a "let's rename this just for the hell of it" as far as I can tell. Seems like a page right out of Google's chat-app strategy,

@lauren Thankfully Max inherited my log-in credentials so that was avoided, but completely agree. Maybe because I uninstalled HBO Max after Max set-up or my Shield TV Pro is doing better than I give it credit for.

@lauren I have a nvidia shield and installed Max before removing HBOMax. It was a smooth transition, automatically picking up the old credentials. It does seem like the Max UI is a bit more responsive, too.

@lauren Why should the software transition be any less of a Mongolian clusterfuck than the business transition? In a few years this will all go into a textbook under "what NOT to do". 😛

@lauren What gets me is it's only a couple of years since we last had to do exactly the same thing with the change from HBO to HBO Max.My theory is that it's all a cynical plot to screw some people out of residuals or something like that

@lauren Have you seen 'W1A', the BBC dramedy about the BBC. They bring in a branding company who decide to drop 'BBC' from the BBC Three channel, and come up with variations on 3, like a triangle or III. The actual BBC then renamed the channel to II!, also moved it online only. Then moved it all back again. https://www.thedrum.com/news/2016/01/04/bbc-marketing-head-admits-w1as-satirical-rebrand-cursed-new-bbc-three-logo

@lauren They added a bunch of crap shows from Discovery Channel to the app. You can’t remove them, so it’s hard to tell what may be decent or not. Also, you just know they’re soon going to charge extra for those shows we never want to see. At that point, I’ll probably spend my HBO streaming $$ elsewhere.

@lauren I guess I was fortunate that my HBO Max account was tied to my Google account so on installing the new one it magically just worked. That or the old app dropped some cookies that let the new one keep working.

@lauren On the Samsung M8 TV, you can’t even remove the HBO Max app. You have to first find the new app somehow, install that, then move it into a place where you can easily see it and move the other one out. It took me an hour of wasted time figuring all this out.

Perhaps I'm conflating pro-IP with anti-piracy. There are a lot of nuanced views in that conceptual neighborhood. I've tried on some of them for size (having been until recently a fanatical copyleftist), but haven't yet found anything that feels to me like a good answer.

@lori I feel that creators should be compensated for their efforts if that is the model that they wish to use.
