No, you probably *don't* need a VPN.

@lauren The only reason I can think of to have one is to get around region blocking, to see media that is only available in a different country. It certainly isn't an effective security measure.

@lauren I use one to view my security cameras when away from home. I don't trust anything security-related that's directly exposed to the internet. The cameras are on their own separate VLAN that's isolated from everything except my Blue Iris server.

@lauren I love to refer to Tom Scott's video on why you probably don't need a VPN: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVDQEoe6ZWY

@lauren Did you just ordered your 3rd pair of sneakers? Do you replace your phone every 2-3 years? do you own 100s of items you don't really need? Why not add a VPN to the list. You can now get *TUUUT* VPN 2 months for free when you buy a 2 year subscription when you use offer code YADIYADIYADI. Terms and conditions apply.

@lauren my perception is that VPNs are useful in cases where you want to protect privacy and you trust the VPN provider more than your ISP. Is that a fair assessment?

@standev Well, the foundational issue is what degree of additional "privacy" any given VPN actually provides, if any. In some cases, they can actually make things worse.

@lauren I’m thinking in terms of HTTPS external metadata. If I trust my VPN provider more than my ISP (because I’m in a country that monitors traffic, my ISP is monitoring traffic for selling on, etc), a VPN prevents the ISP from doing those things. However as you mentioned, VPN providers could also be untrustworthy and routing traffic through them could make things worse.Am I on the right track?
