Does anyone know if Aeroplanes broadcast the frequency they are talking/listening on , like in the transponder etc. or if it’s just all pre-agreed beforehand? How do planes know which frequency to listen on? :think_moe:

@Baa@fedi.absturztau.be I don't know about planes, but on boats (in Europe) there's "channel 16", which is used as a control channel to agree about what work channel to switch to in order to keep having the conversation. All the stations/boats are required to be listening to channel 16, and there are dual radios that can listen to 16 and some other channel and switch to the active one automatically.

@cinnamon I had a look around online and yeah it seems planes do a similar kind of thing, there are two or three general channels they always listen to, I was hoping they would make it easier than that, it’s hard to listen into multiple frequencies with the SDR, especially if they are far away from each-other on the spectrum

@Baa@fedi.absturztau.be I don't know about the specifics of your reception hardware, but for professional boat radios, it's easy to configure them to "hop" between preselected channels on stand by.

@cinnamon yeah I think that’s the step I’m missing, it uses a lot of processing power to listen to a wide range of the spectrum at once, but you’re right I’m not meant to, I can change the frequency at high speed until I find one with chatter :think_moe:
